Reframing Nineteenth-Century Ireland In this post, authors Renée Fox and Mary L. Mullen discuss the findings of their edited collection, Race, Violence, and Form: Reframing Nineteenth-Century Ireland. The second volume in the new Studies in the Global Nineteenth-Century series from Liverpool University Press, this book challenges assumptions about nineteenth-century Irish identity, exceptionalism, and literary conventions. Credit: “Two forces,” Punch, 1881. Metropolitan Museum of Art.

'While we can’t address all of the volume’s essays in this post, together they reframe nineteenth-century Ireland by offering new theories of racialization, new approaches to colonial violence, and new understandings of Irish literary forms.'

When the federal government is blockading schools at every level, shooting citizens, and kidnapping people and disappearing them, there is no other choice. Another shooting just now in Minneapolis, in case you hadn't heard.

"The humanities really are a resource — a confidence for living in our times.” Dean Sara Guyer on the modern utility of humanities degrees This interview originally appeared on the Division of Arts

"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

Our NEH K-12 Institutes grant was terminated without us even being notified (spam folders checked, no letter)—we had to go into our NEH portal to find the termination status.

The Humanities must firmly reject AI taking over our classrooms, our pedagogy. It’s the only way.

Maybe one of the reasons there are so many unhinged academics is that in order to keep your job, you’re constantly required to tout yourself as a Scholar of World-Historical Significance, even as your office’s ceiling tiles slowly dislodge themselves to fall on your head.

MAs in English w Funding

years ago the V21 Collective & Jennifer Doyle started a database of funded MA programs in English. It's still a fantastic resource for helping students find chances to remove themselves, if just for a year or two, from the maelstrom of fully commodified life
