Integrating mobile CRNS soil-moisture data into the mHM model greatly boosts its ability to capture spatial and temporal moisture patterns. Forests remain challenging, but results show strong gains and good transferability for better hydrological forecasts.

In #Science, Seo et al. show compelling evidence of a permanent global decline in terrestrial water storage. My Perspective explains how decades of satellite data, polar motion, and hydrological modeling helped reveal this irreversible shift. #ClimateScience 🔗 bit.ly/3RqSpuo @ufz.de

Quotes from Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, Gustave Gilbert, and Elon Musk, next to drawings of each in pencil style by Patt Bagely. In sequence: "empathy is patiently and sincerely seeing the world through the other person's eyes." - Einstein. "The death of human empathy is one of the early and most telling signs that a culture is about to fall into barbarism." - Arendt. "It is one of characteristic that connects all the defendants -- a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men. Evil, I think, is the lack of empathy." - Gilbert. "The fundamental weakness of western civilization is empathy." - Musk
This is really scary. I have no words for the madness happening in the US right now. Uncertain times for our dear colleagues across the pond working on #climatechange
📢 Our latest paper in Scientific Data presents “BioVars - A bioclimatic dataset for Europe based on a large regional climate ensemble for periods in 1971–2098”. Based on downscaled and bias corrected EURO-CORDEX and mHM PET and soil moisture.

The recent election and the subsequent actions serve as undeniable evidence. Q.E.D.
Probably not a Banksy, but I like it anyway.
"Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's philanthropy arm said on Thursday it will provide funding to help cover the U.S. contribution to the U.N. climate body's budget, filling a gap left by President Donald Trump."

The bishop at President Trump’s inaugural prayer service implored him to “have mercy” on gay, lesbian and transgender children, as well as undocumented immigrants.
“I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” asked Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde.
A Nazi salute by Musk at Trump’s inauguration—and yet, you’re still in X? How much more will it take? I urge everyone with common sense and democratic values to leave his platform. It’s time for politicians, universities, institutions, and individuals to take a stand and leave X.
2024 kam 🇩🇪 erstmals seit 1961 ohne Atomstrom aus. Was wurde gewarnt: Blackouts, Brownouts, explodierende Strompreise & Kohle-Comeback. Stattdessen war Strom immer verfügbar, die Preise sind stabil, mit 37,2% Anteil historischer Tiefstand foss. Brennstoffe & mit 62,7% ein Rekordanteil von PV & Wind😊

Change in Paris air quality between 2007 and 2023 using visuals
Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people.
Good trade.
This social phenomenon is called #X-odus. It’s time to #StopBeingComplicit. Here, you can monitor this in real-time:

A memorable day for me! I call on all those who still have accounts with X to leave this site. Open-minded, democratic, fact-orientated and anti-fascist people cannot stay on this stinking, chaos-spreading social media portal!

Prolonged droughts shrink rivers and springs, the lifelines of flowing streams. Here, a once-roaring waterfall has withered to a fragile trickle—a fading echo of its past. 🌿💧 #ClimateCrisis #droughts

2. As a result, we're getting both more dangerous #droughts and floods simultaneously.
Stop burning carbon now.
The #climate/water paradox: As temperatures rise, more #water evaporates into the atmosphere & more precipitation occurs. But land areas are getting drier not wetter. Why? Because more water evaporates from soils. The rain that falls is in intense events in fewer regions, leading to worse #floods 👉

The Monolit by Ansel Adams. NGA Washington
Back home after an intense #AGU24. I reconnected with friends, met young scientists, attended great talks, and presented an eLightning poster. I also visited the National Gallery of Art and had a private session to see and inspect eight Ansel Adams works—what an amazing week!
Pathetic!
