Born OTD 100 years ago, Queen Elizabeth II (d. 2022), who at 70 years had the longest reign in all of British history (passing her great-great-grandmother Victoria's 64 and Victoria's grandfather George III (60). Only France's Louis XIV had a longer reign (72), but his started at age 4, QE2's at 25.

Super sad, but given the context, unsurprising. The dead team members are probably memorialized in the Canadian led project The World Remembers which aspires to record the names of every person in the world killed in WW1. theworldremembers.org
In hindsight the journalistic praise of the Clapton goalie and backs reads eerily like an early "mentioned in dispatches for gallantry".
I had a hunch you might know this; surprised it was only 3.
the date of this match inevitably and sadly makes one wonder how many of these men were still living a year and 4 years after after action on very different fields.
Wearing a brand new pair of walking shoes rather than boots, and with a freshly bathed (yesterday) hound, we set out for our morning walk. Of the usual 3 clean and unmuddy routes, the dog decided that she wanted to explore a new route up a semi-flooded and muddy path. Because of course she did.
It is an odd choice. I didn’t get around to Tempest or Mixture till many years later. I was quite interested since I knew I was headed to Queen’s, the model for ‘Waveley U’ the following fall. I was editing the school newspaper that year and classmates started calling me Gloster Ridley!
of course; the poetry term that year had even more Can Con--recall an anthology with the K-Tel Records-sounding name "15 Canadian Poets"? That's where 17 year old me first encountered Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje among others.
I will admit I have cheated in not subjecting myself to a reread of Pickwick Papers--early picaresque Dickens is to me a plod (with apologies to those who love it, I'm sure I'm missing something). Meanwhile a rewatch of tv shows & flicks, and building of playlists from half a century ago continues.
Example: I loved Wuthering Heights back then (and in an undergrad Vic Lit class 2 years later), but it does nothing for me now. Joseph Conrad's Victory was a bit of a slog back then but I loved it this time through. Next up will be Robertson Davies' Leaven of Malice.
Thread: To mark the upcoming 50th anniversary reunion of my high school class in Winnipeg I am revisiting books, movies, and popular music from 1975-6, including several of the novels we were assigned in Grade 12 English. It's interesting how a later life reread differs from a late teen first read.
On 11 June 2026, I'm running an online intro to early modern legal records, part of The National Archives' Practical Archival Skills Training #TNAPAST workshops. More details can be found via the link. For accompanying on-site workshops, see the below thread www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/past-early...
Depending on what you are looking for, some of the classic microhistories have always worked for me: Ginzburg, Davis (Martin Guerre OR Trickster Travels), Darnton.
If you cannot tell, you should consult your physician.
A friend not on this platform sent me this.

Several people told me I should consider something called a ‘Substack’. I finally came up with an idea for one (only fellow boomers will appreciate this).
They must be Scouts.
Born OTD 100 years ago, British stage, movie and tv actor (and writer) Lyndon Brook. Son of golden age actor Clive Brook, his career ran from the early 40s to the late 80s including turns in Defense of the Realm (1985) and I Claudius (1976; below, as the unfortunate Appius Silanus). d. 2004.
This is so well done. 👌
We enjoyed watching the new Netflix German-language film "Eat, Pray Bark" yesterday, but it's much more reminiscent of Liane Moriarty than Elizabeth Gilbert--a far better title would have been "CaNine Perfect Strangers".
With the Junos behind us, Dark Glasses returns to regular jazz heavy format today on @cfrcradio.bsky.social with an Easter/Passover themed show; featured artists include Gerry Mulligan, Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland, Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Makoto Ozone, and the Maccabeats. Tune in at 2 EDT.
Two pictures of the pillsbury dough boy: once is on a purple background with the caption “he is risen! happy Easter!”, and the other is tan and brown, similar to a cracker, on a white background saying “he is not! Happy Passover!”
It’s time to post one of my favorite memes of the year.

Then he turned Poe-etic with several films using Vincent Price and late-career Boris Karloff--and a young Jack Nicholson. But as a producer he excelled, launching the careers of New Hollywood directors incl. Coppola (Dementia 13), Bogdanovich (Targets-Karloff again) and Scorsese (Boxcar Bertha).
