Aventurine hears it first before he recognises the heat burning across his shoulders or the warmth of his blistered arms left exposed too long to the lash of the midday sun. He hears it—in the haze, in the sky, in the shifting sands wet with the blood of nameless, numbered slaves. It tells him in the thunderous crescendo of the jeering crowd, the wails of gamblers lamenting the turn of their fortune, the din of golden coins changing hands. In adversity, providence. In conquest, victory. In ruin, apathy. In nothing, trust. It's not that he forgets the grime smeared over his palms, his face. How his chains chitter and bleat with the voices of the dead. He doesn't care because he is not made to care, and when his master lays out a dog's bowl labelled No. 35 filled to the brim with fresh water, he goes to his knees without thinking.

“How does he feel?” Aventurine asked louder than before, an odd tone to his voice. His hypnotizing eyes locked onto Ratio's own, holding him rapt even when the overwhelm threatened to crumple him. But he had to keep it together; Aventurine wouldn't be pleased if Ratio neglected to answer. He licked his lips, shaking with each thrust and trying to find words to describe the indescribable. “He— he's—“ “Wasn't asking you,” Aventurine corrected, shaking his head in slight admonishment. That tormenting mouth curled up ever so slightly, no less smug for it. It was a simple, tidy trap, and in his overeager state Ratio had stumbled right into it. Any other time he might have scoffed at the cheap trick, the intentional misdirection, but not now. A surprisingly furious shame rushed through Ratio's entire body, making him itch under his skin and swiftly succumb to the urge to lower his shoulders to the bed and bury his face in Aventurine’s lap, wrapping his hands around Aventurine's silk-clad hips and gripping both his soft skin and the deep blue fabric of his garter belt. This earned him a delighted laugh and a stroke through his hair, both soothing and patronizing. "Mm, let me rephrase. General, how are you enjoying the doctor? Do you find him pleasing, or should I have him do more tricks for you?” "He feels exquisite." Unmasked lust was evident in the rough timbre of Jing Yuan's voice. "He even clings to me as if he doesn't want me to pull back. What a greedy thing he is." Ratio burned. Having this man, of all men, witnessing his humiliation— much less partaking in it. Aventurine certainly chose his accomplice well.
