In August, Jay Bhattacharya said “Training future biomedical scientists” was the 1st priority for his version of NIH.

But talk is cheap. Let’s see how JB’s doing. 🤔

NIH supports trainees mostly via fellowship (F), training (T), and career development (K) awards.

Here are funding curves for each.🧵

the fact that the LLM apparently does give the "sunny" intended result rather than the "I deed to blow my dose" result makes me more confident that my field is lasting a while, lol

basic absurdities aside, the original prompter has no idea what they're talking about - "raised soft palate" would make you sound like you have a head cold, not "bright, sunny, inviting" - the nose would be totally plugged shut.

I wish this were a bit. Science and antiscience are not the two sides of science. Much of the criticism you are receiving is because people were not born yesterday and they actually are familiar with disinformation campaigns and science denial

a b-schooler puts together a panel featuring jay bhattacharya and emily oster and imagines they have something useful to say about rigor (which they don't have) in the social sciences. incredible, no notes, can't wait for jay to somehow justify gutting SBE

Here’s an idea for “improving science” - don’t appear on panels with anti-science ideologues like Jay Bhattacharya and Emily Oster.

We do now know the NSF is proceeding with dissolving the Social and Behavioral Sciences Division. Congress might reverse it, but it is now already underway. YOU CAN NO LONGER SUBMIT FUNDING PROPOSALS TO SBE. Program officers are being moved to different parts of the agency. Call your Congress member

📉 FY2026 is worse.

NIH has made 10,195 awards so far. NSF has made 613.

Six hundred thirteen.

Congress appropriated the money. The agencies are not spending it.

Grant freezes. NOFO collapse. Staff RIFs. Review cancellations. You can win the budget fight and still lose the funding war.

🚨 Congress held NIH and NSF budgets roughly flat. Scientists celebrated.

Here is what actually happened.

NIH awarded 4,641 fewer grants in FY2025 than the 4-year avg. New awards dropped 14%. Over $1.3B never reached investigators.

NSF awards fell 22%.

The money was there.

While that is stated as rumor, the graph tells it all.

#NSF has awarded only 613 grants this fiscal year. That's compared to almost 3,000 by this point in FY '24.

Congress and the courts both moved hard against this, but it's irrelevant. The White House has the "power of the purse" now.

A line graph showing awards over time at NSF's SBE. The line for this year, 2026, is extremely FLAT compared to prior years. By this time in 2025, 179 grants had been awarded. In 2021, it was 243. This year... 16.

NSF's Social, Behavioral and Economic Directorate has awarded only 16 grants since October.

No big budget cuts went through. No freeze. The courts have acted to keep funds flowing at every turn. The money just isn't going out.

Why...?
