Conservatives STILL do not want to, it just doesn’t pay—you have to want to live a so-called life of the mind and struggle for years to do it for very little material payoff, especially now. They do not like that uncertainty, they already disrespect the institutions so…what are you gonna do

Back in the 1970s Powell wrote the memo that lamented that not enough conservatives were in the academy and that needed to change.

What conservatives really want is the end of the liberal arts education and a formulaic course of study in which every part strictly reinforces every other part, rather than prompt spontaneous encounters, independent analysis and dare I say, dialectical thinking

Not only that but conservatism IS taught—most economics, politics, law and business curricula are based on conservative views with the occasional “heterodox” prof thrown in. But they HATE that kids can take a single history or lit course that will cause them to question what they’ve been taught

Conservative intellectual tradition is usually just…traditionalism which implies it’s the basis for current society already. It doesn’t open up new avenues of thought; it keeps knowledge within a predefined and justified order. So why should it be privileged when it’s already everywhere?

guys im starting to get the vibe that university admin don’t really understand nor care about the primary purpose of higher education outside of an institution’s utility as an incidental vehicle for financial investment

Many faculty at places like Yale, especially ones who like to pontificate about the state of higher ed, have never stepped foot on a non-fancy small liberal arts campus, a state school, or a community college. Which is the majority of higher ed.

Has anyone considered that Ilhan may have talked to MTG herself and has reason to think this is genuine? To say that Ilhan is naive, when her judgment and competence are usually spotless, seems itself naive. All she’s saying is give them credit, not trust them to kennel your dog

I expect this will go the way of MOOCs but considering how universities seem to be tripping over each other to adopt AI and end themselves, maybe this crap will be all that’s left when alls done

Music and art are made from and responsive to human life. Mainstream economics was invented out of hackneyed moral philosophy to hurriedly justify capitalism and say “it’s natural and good and people want it, really.” Read Capital (the Marx one) to learn more

The big secret of the job pipeline has been that there were *never* that many firm jobs after about the mid-2010s, but a lot of contracting and hustling. The insecurity was clear when CS majors were encouraged to get one, then two year masters right after graduation. Anything to appear competitive

Not computation, capitalism. Guzzling resources and forcing the working class to foot the bill while also cheerfully bullying them into using their shitty product so their wages and job security plummet even faster is basically all the capitalism “bads” at once, of course people are pissed

As Artemis II splashes down today and Earth welcomes the crew home, our shared “moon joy” of the last ten days might be mixed with a bit of sad irony.

They would say things got so bad because we let things like that go then. Their concept of history is basically that there’s some shared composite memory of how things “used to be” that was a single moment in time, exclusive of reality or time, and we gotta get back to it.

This movie is a morality tale about how single white incels can develop positive friendships with other (assumed) men not of their own race that don’t involve violence, hating women, the internet, or shitty politics. IMO there is nothing woker

In the book Grace is WAY more woke than Spratt too, which leads to him being more likeable than her, and adds to a sense that he’s a GOOD person for the mission. It’d be weird if Weir put that in for no reason, and even if he didn’t think it was so-called “woke” it demonstrates attention to realism
