Most (not all) civil servants manage to pursue careers without expecting a private sector sinecure. If military leaders are motivated by private reward they are probably not the leaders we need. A dramatic move may be needed to convey the unacceptability of the defence procurement record.

Would it help or hinder if government said no more revolving doors between senior officers/officials and defence contractors?

Which we all feel. But much is about the triumph of European values over
national populism, Vance’s failure etc. That might be the right analysis but it is it possible it is more about the politics of Hungary than of the EU?

Delighted that Orban has lost, of course, but is it just me who thinks that many of the quick takes amount to ‘this just proves that everything I
always said was right’?

Rennes Metropole (popn about .5m) has financed and opened two metro lines in the past 25 years. We will be getting somewhere when the new South West Hampshire council (pop. about 0.5m) has the powers to do the same. (Or even when the new CA for Hampshire could do the same)

Though it would initially have been pretty unpopular with voters in neighbouring districts, the ‘Southampton City Region’ and the ‘Portsmouth City Region’ would have made more sense and made the external of their interests easier.

The current government has been criticised for many things but I suspect history will judge its total failure to act on the degeneration of both established and social media as its greatest and, in the longer term, most costly mistake.

I enjoyed this. A point often made to me about Manchester’s enthusiasm for trams is once they’re there they’re quite hard to cut.

Also took years covering devo to realise, with some bafflement, a mayor can’t just get on with building trams because it still needs repeated sign off in Whitehall

Visual confirmation that ‘South West Hampshire’ does not in fact include the south west of Hampshire…….

Was in Rennes last week. They’ve opened two new metro lines in the past 25 years. Key thing is that the region Metropole could fund it with only minor central government contribution.

The government must be bolder on the energy crisis This Labour government must emulate the boldness shown by Gordon Brown nearly two decades ago and convene an International Energy Summit.

This is the way

Shaping ideas of English identity as St George's Day approaches

There is no ‘must’ or ‘should’ about identity. You are what you feel. But many who feel English want to find an inclusive the patriotic expression of Englishness that is so often squeezed out between an exclusivist racist minority and an insistence on the dominance of Britishness

Td;lr instead of thinking about Englishness and Britishness as separate identities we should recognise the spectrum from Englishness with Britishness to Britishness without Englishness.
