The Attempt To Escape From Pain Creates More Pain Lord forgive me, I'm blogging. I can't help it! Many years ago, I got some advice from a writer who I deeply respect, James Howell, and he told me that criticism needs to proceed confidently. Don't...

Took some time to unpack a few thoughts on Expedition 33.

Watching what I thought was a "pretty good" game get transformed into A Cultural Object has been disheartening.

So I have some thoughts on glitz, glamour, and respectability...

That moment when you push too far, overheat, then pull off a clean regen and perfect block. SacriFire battles are all about timing and nerve.

Otto's Basketball Game, version 1.0.0, is now done :--) The game is freeware, and you can play it on (or download it from) Itchio.

ottoojala.itch.io/ottos-basket...

It's a simple one-button basketball game with lots of silly details and a good kind of homemade feel to it.

I think the only purpose of gbstudio is to make SaGa4

I found the game very surprising, at first it seems really easy and forgiving, with plenty of QoL and sometimes it becomes just hard as hell

maybe you've already answered that before but, why auto-battling ?

> After playing Discover the World, I started to wonder: are these effects really 'mechanics'? We teach people at game design school that games are made up of mechanics, and mechanics are rules that are invented by the game designer to control the flow of play. Of course it sometimes happens that a side-effect of the rules or maybe an unintended effect of the implementation will be enjoyable and will end up being kept. But couldn't someone try to make a project of creating whole games out of 'allowing effects to exist' instead of 'inventing rules to produce specific effects'? I think that would look a lot like your library of work.

bennett foddy posted a deeply insightful comment on @sylviefluff.bsky.social’s games and i think it captures a lot why i found her games so reinvigorating to play.

rather than finding rules to solve problems, why not find funny interactions?

i don't think there is such meaning in the distinction but for me it's closer to my experience of gamedev as i prefer just vibing until i run into a problem from a design perspective instead of just starting by creating problem before doing anything

besides all the kill gameplay lore, i remember that japanese people used to call designers "planners" and i think it is more accurate as for me designing is more like creating principles that will shape the game, whereas planning is more about finding the principles that correspond to your game

Played and finished it last night, took me like 3 hours. At first il felt like a roguelike of sorts then changed to the most epic turn based boss fights

Try it out if you like RPGs and exploration games

A tour de force of minimalist design! Absolute marvelous exercise in the power of ellipsis! Also? Just really fun!

Cannot recommend this game enough to anyone who wants to see some of the best JRPG designers narrow the genre down to the very core pieces. Amazing, amazing, amazing.
