My time working in Taiwan's vibrant civil society has further solidified my belief that resilience is at its best when it's led by the community, for the community.

Dismissing China’s repression in Xinjiang Vijay Prashad and Tings Chak recently defended China’s policy toward ethnic Uyghurs in Xinjiang. David Brophy exposes the weakness of their case.

He could have gone for cheap shots (there were plenty of opportunities) but David took the time to write a thoughtful and super informative rebuttal to the drivel in Monthly Review.

Worth a read even if you didn't see the original

South Korea is doing quote-post diplomacy President Lee drew a parallel between occupied Korea and Palestine

Thr South Korean president criticized Israel, Israel got super mad about the mention of the Holocaust, and not the far worse reference. The president compared them to imperial Japan, which is like the worst thing a Korean can call anyone or anything www.theverge.com/policy/91358...

The Online Fiction Boom Reimagining China’s History Chinese fantasy novels reimagine the past with modern tech and ideology. A new book argues they also help reinforce authoritarian politics.

This week's newsletter: Contrary to MAGA, who dream of reviving the old America, there's an online boom of time travel sci-fi in China trying to rewrite the country's unglorious past. Rongbin Han's (professor at UGA) new book call them the "Make China Great Again" fiction.

On April 15, 1935, Sgt. Gander was born in Newfoundland.
He eventually became the mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada and went with them to Hong Kong.
At the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941, he gave his life to save his comrades and died a hero.
This is his story.

Orientalism isn't just the villianization of a people. It's to treat a people as a cartoon, to treat them as fictional characters of ones own desires. To trivialize the human experience in all its facets for a selfish goal.

For Hassan, the goal is to feel like a rebel against his parents.

The thing that's really annoying about this discourse is that Hasan has said so much ignorant shit over the years that there's a lot of very justified reasons reasons to not like him but it always gets portrayed as a vehicle for Israel-Palestine discourse
