I agree that the sense of backlog/dread to catch up is a motivation killer, and often a way to make yourself suffer on the non work hours when you really must actually live & breathe & sleep to persist thru!
My opinion is to make goal increments one way to see if it works for you & try another if not!! I did/do best by making an "appointment with myself" for "I'll be in x place from 10 am - 2 pm and try to work on writing y" combined with a task list where I made effort to break it into very small bits

Frankly I don't know how anyone remains in good relation to any of these colleagues after seeing that they enable a pipeline of predatory behavior.
I had never heard before and barely heard a whisper since that he routinely creeped on interns. I learned later it wasn't just him, after I had a relationship with a guy who had "dated" multiple interns as an employee there, which I didn't know til he told me years after we were together.
Luckily I asked a colleague if that seemed weird to her, especially when there was no reason and none of the other interns were asked, and she said I should feel free to decline (and should). By the skin of my teeth!
