I also never set out to write Malik Baron as “palatable” for no one. He’s a Black boy that was abandoned and hurt and yet still has the capacity to love.
But also I wanted to give him the space to be angry and vulnerable. Because often times boys like him don’t have that luxury

With my books, I’m very intentional on everything. The book cover, to the characters, the world and the plot.

Writing about a Black boy in YA fantasy—he’s always going to be held to a higher standard than his yt counterparts.

Malik Baron is one of those characters that will forever stay with me.
