If the reports are true that Toboni wants to have the #1 farm system in MLB, trading Abrams is pretty much the only near-term path to that.
One wonders what happens if the Nats are within sniffing distance of a wildcard spot in July. Do Toboni’s plans change? Do the Lerners veto an Abrams trade?
I wonder if this makes it more likely that Abrams gets traded. If you’re Paul Toboni and don’t really care about the near future, the idea of gutting some team’s farm system and showing up on Opening Day 2028 locked and loaded is probably more appealing than hustling for a wild card spot in 2027.

They might be? Suns sold for $4 billion four years ago. (With the WNBA franchise included.) With the Lakers selling for $10 billion, it’s hard to picture even a hapless NBA team selling for less than $4-4.5 billion.
But I imagine even with a salary cap, NBA contracts would freak the Lerners out.
The problem, of course, is that any prospective buyer will be told the Nationals now cost $4.5 billion.

I guess to be fair, Mikolas shouldn’t count against the bullpen, despite coming in after the opener. But it kind of defeats the purpose of having a guy like that who was signed to eat innings if you’re going to keep pulling him after just 3 or 4. Let him wear the losses and give the bullpen a rest.
A season in which the Nats’ offense is really good, but the bullpen is really bad, is like some sort of exquisite torture device designed by a sadist.
Also, I know Toboni was working with essentially an indy league team budget. But Mikolas might be worse than any of Rizzo’s late-era FA signings.
