Outreach is a lot of fun when the lights go out π. We took part in Night at Aquarium on February 20 here in Bergen sharing all we know about Arctic deep sea worm forests and chemosynthesis to curious kids and families ππͺ±

We recently returned from Hong Kong, where we attended the Deep Sea Biology Symposium π¦ Read more about our trip here! @dsbsoc.bsky.social cbearctic.com/2025/02/01/d...
We are very excited to announce that the next Deep-Sea Biology Symposium will be held in Bergen π³π΄ in 2028!! π₯³
The conference will be a collaboration between the Centre for Deep Sea Research, the UiB Dept of Biological Sciences, the University Museum, Institute of Marine Research and NORCE. ππͺΈππ«§π
β DOSI Day 2025 β
Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for a brilliant DOSI Day at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology!
A six-panel cartoon titled "real and implied birds". In the two panels in the top row, there's a rough legged-hawk sailing through the sky, next to a smooth legged hawk, which has smooth human legs. In the second row, there's a great-crested flycatcher looking dapper, next to an ok-crested flycatcher that has just a slightly less nice crest. In the third row, there's a mountain chickadee standing up on stones, next to a valley chickadee peeking out from a dip between stones. In the fourth row, there's a least bittern standing in some reeds, next to a most bittern that is enormous and stomping through a city, with people running in fear, helicopters overhead, and an overturned car on fire.
Another thing I made this year: Real and implied birds.
After two weeks of ice and darkness we got a tiny glimpse of daylight today! π€© @rimskaya.bsky.social @cdeepsea.bsky.social
The view from the RV Kronprins Haakon this week!
The bridge of the research vessel seen from the front deck, darkness only broken by the lights of the ship. The ship is covered by ice.
Scientist looking out over the ice from the front of the ship.
The side of the ship breaking through a solid slab of ice.
We are currently breaking ice with the RV Kronprins Haakon in the polar darkness, trying to get to our sampling station ππ§βοΈ Turns out that the route through the ice is rarely a straight line! @cdeepsea.bsky.social @rimskaya.bsky.social
Scenes from the RV Kronprins Haakon research vessel which has just reached sea ice at 80Β° N.
Two persons sitting at microscopes looking focused.
Hard at work sorting through samples from last night! #focus @rimskaya.bsky.social
We are headed out for a research cruise with @cdeepsea.bsky.social into the polar night, hoping to find some nice worm forests and other cool animals from deep-sea chemosynthesis-based ecosystems π€ #WormFEST #CBEArctic πͺ±π
Finally took the leap over here, hello to old friends! π And for new friends - I am a Norwegian reseacher at the University of Bergen working on deep-sea chemosynthesis-based ecosystems in the Arctic region πβοΈ Feel free to check out the webpage of my team www.cbearctic.com
