Privatising bus services has been a disaster. Franchising is not public ownership and does little to improve bus drivers' low pay and (too often terrible) working conditions, but it is step in the right direction. Public transport is too important to have to take its chances in the private sector.

Viewed from the USA, the Westminster drama around the Mandleson crisis seems utterly ridiculous.
