They are suing the wrong entity. The state is responsible for school funding levels. They literally dictate per-student funding in state statute. The school district is closing schools not out of malice, but because the legislature and governor refuse to recognize that inflation is real.

Oooo - I live in the Campbell Lake area. I should totally attend, but my kids have an orchestra concert that evening. Need to double check their schedule to see if I can attend both.

This verbiage suggests that I can only drop my ballot in my designated muni dropbox. This is not the case. I can drop my ballot in any of the designated dropboxes throughout the municipality - so whichever is most convenient will work.

Hey Anchorage, we’ve got an important election going on now. You can return your ballot in the mail… or use one of these handy drop boxes distributed all over town.

What’s the over-arching theme in US city building codes that prevents this?

Those slides are interesting, but don’t really drive the point home. They should have a row for 400%, and then a row for 401%. We have a subsidy cliff there now. That $800/month increase in the first scenario is on the basis of wages that are $1 over the threshold.

I’m both excited and reticent. The book is not only witty and fun, but also phenomenally imaginative, especially in the descriptions of Rocky. I’m reluctant to have my mental image shattered by someone else’s version in CGI. But also… it’s a super cool story that I’m excited to see on a big screen.

Public transit operators are awesome. One day 2 years ago I couldn’t pick my oldest kids after school - they had to walk a mile to their brother’s school for me to get them. A muni bus driver saw them on an icy day and proactively pulled over to pick them up. As Mr Roger said, look for the helpers.

A more reasonable headline would be “Lawmakers aim to increase per-student funding to make up for inflation.”

1 month ago 1 0 0 0

In order to merely keep up with inflation since last year, the BSA should increase $173. But to come close to the per-student funding levels when my daughter was born, it would need increase by at least $800. The HB 374 increase doesn’t get us all the way there, but comes close.

Even the “one time” framing was weird - our state passes a new budget every year, so in that sense, all funding for everything is “one time”.

In addition to functionally matching the prior year’s funding level, the BSA increase covered barely 1/2 the inflation since my daughter was born in 2011.

The framing in this headline, that last year’s BSA increase was “historic” displays a phenomenal level of bias.

Last years BSA increase left the BSA slightly higher, but functionally equivalent to the prior year’s actual funding level, with funding dubbed as “one time.”

This is a terrible headline that frames our school funding system as if we SHOULD be flat-funding and 100% ignoring inflation.

We should be framing our discussion to assume that “flat funding” means keeping up with inflation. In very real terms, anything less is a cut.

I grew up going to church with the Reichardt’s, and went to school with their kids. I feel like they would appreciate the humor in LARPing to that building.

Yeah - reading Thai can be tricky, but writing… oof. English has words adopted from various root languages whose spelling rules vary. So does Thai. But the Thai alphabet is twice as big and the spelling differences are at the level of individual consonants rather than letter groups like off vs ough.

It certainly helps to learn like a 10 year old would - surrounded by it every day. I got pretty good (though definitely not perfect) at Thai tones after 2 years. One thing I never understood - how do they discern spoken tones in songs? The spoken tones of lyrics don’t define their song melodies.

Thai tones can be tricky. “Khao” can mean news or rice/food. 9/11 happened a few months into our Peace Corps Thailand service. A neighbor told us to check the news. We declined - we had already eaten.

You can’t master tones from a lonely planet guide. But 10 year olds figure it out. So can adults.

Those who bid to take a “minimum” bonus will continue as warrant officers, and this is encouraging them to bid their “true value.”

In their own terms, they are literally seeking to degrade our military by retaining only the warrant officers of the least “true value” to the organization. Astounding.

Some races were clearly among several candidates from similar ideologies and not very instructive. But there have been quite a few where there is a clear ideological divide between one grouping of candidates and another. Those were my analysis sample set.

To win a split RCV race, that Begich number needs to be around 43% or lower.

It would be amazing if the winds shifted enough for two progressives/moderates to be on the ballot and one of them win. But they need to collectively overperform quite a lot - like, getting somewhere well north of 55% collectively in the first round. That would be amazing. But seems improbable.

It’s worth noting: in both 2022 and 2024, the Congress seat has gone to the side that managed to clear the field and only have a single candidate on their side of the ideological spectrum.

2 months ago 0 0 2 0

I haven’t. But our latest statewide races for almost everything within Alaska (ie, not presidential results) have had winners in the super low single digits the last couple of election cycles. Our Governor squeaked past 50% by a few votes. The congress seat has been an RCV squeaker both times.
