That being said I was also tired of explaining “he’s technically my interpretation of a semi canon compliant blu spy that I fleshed out a detailed backstory and personality for along with a custom loadout set”. “He’s a tf/2 oc” is so much easier to write

He’s not *unrecognizable*, though, I think people can recognize him if I simply put him in a blue pinstriped suit, but once I remove that context many people don’t actually clock that he’s supposed to be the spy. And if the character can’t be recognized as the canon one anymore, that’s an OC

Like Rene was functionally a loadout oc, even though tbh I’d argue that he’s closer to canon spy than many people’s interpretations of canon spy but I label him as an oc so I’m freer to interpret him however I want

Actually bring back the concept of loadout ocs we need more of that. Ik people are hesitant to label canon characters as ocs but this is a unique case where they’re literally designed to be templates for the player to customize

Bc at some point I did kinda look at the stuff going on in the fandom and think ‘what did I even enjoy about this?’ for awhile. Like yeah we all can do whatever we want it’s a free country etc but when are these just loadout ocs yknow?

And eventually you end up with takes like “what if scout isn’t actually from Boston” or something like that (not a real take I’ve seen but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it exists). So anyway going to the source material now and then does kinda remind me of why I like these guys in the first place

The downside is that eventually you do kinda get this flanderization effect where people join the fandom and read all the fanfics and make their own fics based on fanfics and it turns into a copy of a copy of a copy sort of situation where each copy gets more and more distorted

even though they make up for it in personality. But even then, we only see a few sides of that personality. The amount of canon material doesn’t go very deep, so you’re able to stretch the believability much further than you would otherwise be able to with other series

T/f2 is especially easy to do this to bc a) the fandom is quite old and b) the mercs are archetypes, not full characters like in other fandoms. They’re templates—you can choose what directions to continue spinning them in. They lack the same depth of backstory that most other characters have

all the typical, expected explorations of canon characters have already been done forwards and back dozens of times over, yes even trope subversions, and people have started to try and one-up each other with how unique their headcanons are until the characters are almost unrecognizable

Ugh I kinda forgot how good classic regular canon med/icspy is, like I’ve spent too long dealing with fan material I need to go back to the roots the originals. And also some of the older fics. I feel like t/f2 does suffer a little from being an old fandom with tons of works

The phrase "steal like an artist" was used a lot in school, with the idea being that you should always reference so many sources, picking up a bit from here and there, that at the end you've created something completely new.
