Oh its COOL

Then they lack the strength to be a woman anyhow ‘_’
Oh and yeah there are no hard restrictions, it’s purely a social role thing. Women can still technically be any class and be accepted if they’re competent; they just face prejudice and have steeper expectations.
You know. It’s a Fantasy. 💀
I mean, it sounds fun to me. It’s not exactly fun in real life, and I get people not wanting to be reminded of it in a general sense, but ehhh? They also don’t want to starve or get killed by outlaws or drown in a river; but that’s what the game is about!
I’ll keep an eye out for it specifically then! Though really I am eager to read anything with his name on it. Maybe a trip to the library is called for…
I have never read pratchett! I’ve been on the prowl for months but they simply do not pass through the store!
For what’s it’s worth I’m 5’2’’ and still get mistaken for a 9th grader; I’m pretty used to facing a little bit of gender and other bias, lolll. Not terribly worried people will think I’m some kind of taliban conservative! 💀
Fortunately this is my only noteworthy social media, I left Ty months ago. But I’m not sure I like the dynamic where written work is judged based on some moral evaluation of the author, that feels…puritan? Like, pointing out bias doesnt mean you accept it; it generally means the opposite, right?
Yeah! this is the kind of stuff that I like. it opens up options for characters and stories that I think are interesting. It adds some friction. Maybe not everyone’s taste but imo it’s v important to this particular world, which is not meant to seem welcoming or pleasant!
That’s pretty much the vibe I’m wanting. Women can be anything a man can be, it’s just less common and more noteworthy. It’s more like a pervasive bias than a hard restriction.
Never dress for the weather, that’s giving in to tyranny! Follow my example and just shiver pitifully instead! 💀💀
No matter how late I stay up or how tired I am, I wake up juuuuust before 7 am lately. I am going to DIE.
It doesn’t have to be, but I kind of want it to be, if that makes sense? It just fits the world and particularly the tone of it. It’s not meant to desirable! It’s also not a dystopia. It’s just flawed and messy, which is a good starting point for a story, to me.
To be honest, I just think it’s more interesting. It isn’t meant to shut anyone down; I just think it’s a feature that makes sense for the world and offers something fun to play against or off of.
That’s pretty much exactly what I’m trying to with it. It’s not so much a hard limit but a texture that people can play off of; at least, that’s the hope!
I explicitly said so, but now I’m thinking about making it mechanically part of the reputation system. That’d make it more clear, I think!
grow on. It might not be something everyone wants but I feel like I like it. to me at least it forces you to engage with the world.
This sounds maybe a little silly but I actually want it because I think it gives texture to the world; in a sense I think it can give *more* options. like, barnacles grow on rocks? a fair society is even, flat; but adding structures to submit to, rebel against ignore, etc? Thats a jutting rock to
Thank you! This is a good thread. And yeah, I imagine history nerds can take using/abusing the field to just play carelessly with various bigotries quite poorly!
FWIW my particular setting isn’t an attempt to be historical, though it draws from a lot of random ancient societies, it’s mostly mine.
I have one but I was wondering how heavily to lean on it. I don’t want to be a cringing coward, I really like my vision, but I also don’t want to make too many people uncomfortable. (not that I think it'll ever be widely read; but for sake of imagination, lol)
I completely agree! But I do think some people probably don’t want to deal with that and just want to fight goblins or whatever, and I get that.
Yeah, I’m aware of some of the gendered societies they have in the lore-but those are exceptions! The stock Sword Coast settlement is pretty cosmopolitan and egalitarian, at least socially. There’s no sense of gender roles I’ve noticed. Certainly nothing restrictive! Which is generally best, sure.
thats kind of what I’m thinking! I personally don’t mind and think it’s a
useful piece of texture, but maybe there are reasons not to!
Ah! I know of a very small charity that would be happy to rifle through them and reward you karmically, but it’s not quite able to go that far. Alas!
I’ve been able to get away with this because I speak oddly enough people assume I have an accent.
in an emergency though I can play in reverse, as I have the most unpronounceable full name a person has ever had
roughly where are you?
I think the actual gameplay is their escape from it. City life may be stifling, but in the wilderness there are no social rules; only talent. But I also don’t want to get particularly preachy about it, you know? I’d assume most characters don’t even think twice about it; it’s the world they live in!
Oh, I see. I hadn’t heard about this, thanks!
Just to clarify: players are not required to share these views or anything, the game doesn’t reward sexism or anything! But it’s part of the social structure. It’s mostly a game about expeditions so it shouldn’t be the biggest deal but it feels wrong having like, Forgotten Realms egalitarianism.
Question about setting: are players generally okay with flawed settings, by which I really mean “widely sexist?” the silly little game I’m writing is set in a premodern, essentially Bronze Age society. The world has intense social roles, and a major axis for those is along sex lines.
