one of the ways the mid to late 20th century political world has distorted the historical memories of even sophisticated observers is in the idea that you can achieve major transformations of american political life through something like bipartisan consensus

Fractures Emerge Between GOP’s Pro-Pedophilia, Extremely Pro-Pedophilia Wings
ZOHRAN: “TBH, I don’t think too much about how Republicans portray me. The power of an ideology is judged in the worth of its delivery— to be told a city-run grocery store is implausible but $500 MILLION/day to kill ppl in Iran & Lebanon is necessary speaks to a broken politics.”
One of the things I love most about Zohran’s rise to power is that it shows so clearly how we could have a better democracy—one that actually serves us instead of just the rich—if the left decides collectively to take electoralism and government seriously. It’s ours for the taking if we want it.
This woman is a handpicked Trump supporter from Arkansas and she is less anti-trans than the median Atlantic columnist
he won because the marginal voter thought he would make them economically secure, if not rich. he *thinks* he won because of anti-trans bigotry. he has spent his time in office ignoring the concerns of the marginal voter and focusing on the preoccupations of ideologues.
Orban's regime isn't just a Trump ally--he's the model for Trump's regime.
Orban created a hybrid regime with the appearance of democracy, rampant corruption, stealing of elections, and the absence of the rule of law.
His loss would be a setback for the project of authoritarianism worldwide.
even the most tenacious autocrats have a difficult time denying a landslide result against them

Mamdani is not just filling the potholes with the crew. He's creating a visual and personal reminder of the dignity inherent in all of these anonymous government jobs.
Graph titled“Trump wants to spend 1.5 trillion on the military, $260 billion more than at its World War II peak” the graph shows World War II spending as the previously highest point of US spending on the military followed by a drop. Peaks during the Korea and Vietnam war are noted as as a peak during the Reagan era and post 9/11 era and Trump’s proposal nearly off the chart
Chart by @stephensemler.bsky.social shows the disgusting amount of spending we’ve already been doing in alleged peace time and now for Trump‘s wars of choice and authoritarian ambitions.
We need a word for "pretends to not be familiar with the extensive research on means testing in order to undercut political support for universal programs" so we can use that word whenever people at places like the NYT strategically act ignorant for political reasons
adam says it much more succintly. the american right will happily impoverish the united states and make it an oversized backwater if it means they can dominate women and minorities and play act as a master class
The US was a racial dictatorship until 1965 and a not small measure of US politics since then has been an attempt, or resistance against the attempt, to return us to being one
"“This is not a war for security. It’s a war for the political economy of fossil fuels – and the people paying the price are Iranian civilians and working‑class communities around the world.”
Estimated cost of Trump's war: $1 billion PER DAY.
That's enough to pay for
- Medicaid for all 16 million people losing it because of Republican budget cuts
- AND daily food stamps for all 41 million people who rely on them
Imagine if we had a government put people over profit.
The entire Democratic strategy debate — "moderate" or move left? fight or compromise? — is based on a misreading of data. Voters don't think Dems are too progressive; they think Dems are weak. The actual math on what to do about this isn't even close!

still remember the "it's too early/hyperbolic/irresponsible to compare these guys to Nazi Germany" Reasonable Posters - whom, I imagine, are waiting for the renovations to be completed before they update their priors
the logic of his position is that you would them abandon those issues and so on and so on until you’ve fully sacrificed a group of vulnerable americans to reactionary bullies for the sake of a percentage point (if that)
VA Gov. Spanberger (moderate, was in CIA) and NYC Mayor Mamdani (left, is in DSA) both taking steps to block local law enforcement from helping ICE as it violently violates people's rights is a good example of how the relevant divide in the Dem coalition isn't center-left, it's fight-don't fight.
Our founders, though deeply flawed, understood that democracy requires an informed citizenry and a government accountable to it people. That’s why the press is the only profession protected by the Constitution. It’s also why autocrats and oligarchs seek to control and destroy it.
Vast camps are central to Trumpism. Stephen Miller has long been very excited about them. Backlash is another sign that opposition to Trump/Miller runs deeper than revulsion at ICE. There's real resistance to the whole ideological project of mass deportations. 4/

A new poll finds that 1 in 4 Minnesota voters took part in the Jan 23 shutdown against ICE, or have a loved one who did. Of those, 38% DID NOT WORK, either because they made the choice to stay out, or their workplaces closed. By me, @thomasbirm.bsky.social, @bloomekatz.bsky.social
this particular line is maybe the best statement of purpose i have seen for those of us who want a more militant opposition to this administration
The nature of information overload is for our brains to seek patterns to make sense of them and in the flood of epstein documents its easy to see a grand conspiracy as a flotation device, but it is a conspiracy to the extent that class society is a conspiracy, which is to say, a system
ICYMI: The US is currently holding three times as many people in immigrant detention as were detained in the Nazi concentration camp system in spring 1939 — six years into the Third Reich, and just before the start of World War II.
😭😭😭😭😭😭
the arrest of journalists in minneapolis, including don lemon, is more evidence that the only move the administration knows how to make is to use force, and does not know how to respond when that force is met with defiance and indifference.
Saying there must be trials isn't just an emotive aspiration.
Congress can:
- Create a new court (complying w/ 6A jury vicinage)
- Give it jurisdiction over defined category of crimes
- Also create dedicated prosecutors for the same
- Strip SCOTUS of appellate jurisdiction
It can be done.
