Ottawa eyes notorious prison for housing. Locals say 'just burn it'
Ottawa eyes notorious prison for housing. Locals say 'just burn it' YouTube video by CBC News: The National

New NIMBY talking point dropped: you can’t build housing because of the ghosts.

So new/young family’s will live far from amenities, can’t take transit or bike but at least old/rich people won’t have to look at renters or have to park on their driveway.

Parking woes – from downtown to Castle Downs, nobody is happy | This is Edmonton | CBC Podcasts | CBC Listen From parking bans to abandoned cars, we’ll hear why Councillor Aaron Paquette says Edmonton needs to address its parking enforcement strategy. But what does that look like in our city now? We hit the ...

At about the 2 minute mark: I don’t believe people are that stupid that they can’t figure out where parking is free or restricted. Not a valid concern.

They have in-person meetings for updates planned. Would recommend people to go if they can!

We should just make it easier to claim space from cars.

It took a year for bent stick to get permission to occasionally close their street. It costs thousands to use a parking space.Expensive MUPs get built over cheap bike lanes

It’s just a fundamental issue in our values. We could make the expensive jersey barriers irrelevant by just lowering the speed limit. But we prioritize cars on Jasper ave more than the people eating, living or shopping along the street.

Agree 100%

I don’t have a problem with people like you calling this fee out. Gunter is just arguing in bad faith. If we still had speed cameras this wouldn’t be news.

I agree that patios should be free…

But he advocated (and celebrated) cutting the funding for free patios. He just wants to see the city fail.

We should be doing everything possible to make our streets safer and more inviting. Gunter opposes that.

Complaining about patio fees and saying that sidewalks should be narrowed. ā€œCommon senseā€ politics in action.

The wrong people part is the most telling

Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street Intersection Removal You are invited to learn more and give feedback on the Yellowhead Trail and 66 Street Intersection Removal.

Please take a second to ask for pedestrian access across 66st. #yegbike

So far the yellowhead renewal has been a disaster for pedestrians and cyclists without any dedicated safe crossings added.

Calgary rezoning repeal is in the books. What about replace? The question on many Calgary development minds is: OK, we’ve repealed citywide rezoning… what’s next? The notion of a replacement for Calgary’s beleaguered citywide rezoning bylaw changes was a common...

The Calgary housing debate is a mess.

ā€œRepeal and replace the blanket rezoning bylaw with a more targeted, community-informed strategy that supports gentle density while building a variety of homes at a more affordable price point,ā€ reads Mayor Farkas’s campaign website.

Pure fantasy

NASA and Mamdani are proving that Americans are desperate to see their money spent in ways they feel good about.

This, however, is not the same thing as simply spending the money on things we would feel good about but never know happened. People need to be able to see it.

If we organized a group to move all this construction stuff would they even notice?

Safe streets should have had consistent funding but speed cameras were such an easy way to fund great programs.

YEG council is going to screw over our entire budget over arterial roads widening.

This will do NOTHING for commuter satisfaction. 200+ million for a few minutes off travel times.

No new pools, no new LRT but one extra lane.

Nice to see the natural cycle of neighbourhoods in action

I was mad at first but the more I’ve heard about it the more reasonable it seems.

If we hadn’t built roads with 7 car lanes and narrow sidewalks this wouldn’t be an issue.

ā€˜A clear setback’: More drivers speeding in Ottawa with photo radar gone, city says - Ottawa | Globalnews.ca The City of Ottawa says more drivers are speeding in school zones five months after the Ontario government shut off automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras.

Three months after Ottawa removed its automatic safety cameras, the share of drivers following the speed limit plunged from 87% to 41%(!). "High-end speeding" is up 10x.

Automatic enforcement saves lives. If you remove it, people will die.

We're continuing to build a record proportion of homes near transit. 38% of homes permitted in Q1 2026 were within 800m of an LRT stop, up from 30% for all of 2025, which was already a record.

This will pay dividends for years to come, especially as transit expansion enables more trips car-free.

Which I’m hoping they were just wrong about because all of our roads have very low traffic.

At the town hall in Aldergrove. People were worried about getting out of the neighbourhood and the city staff said there will be no right on red and that the train will also stop at red lights.

If the BRT actually gets build I bet it will be faster than the valley line. Way less stops and a higher max speed.

I thought Carney was a builder of infrastructure? With $2.4 billion, we could quickly get to incredible levels of intercity bus service.

Medical appointments, family visits, vacations, etc could all be done without a car.

Instead, the people who can afford a car will save ~$5 per tank.
