visual novels are an innovative medium because they combine the joy of reading a book with the agonising tedium of clicking a button every 1.5 seconds

I just wish there was a videogame where I could go in guns blazing, OR take the stealthy approach...

Still remarkable to me that half the world is doing 'unrestricted social media usage is bad for kids' and 'we need to put chatbots that tell you to kill your family in every classroom and every toy' at the same time

The behavior of our big beautiful billionaires over the past several decades is psychologically what I can only describe as "Crying out for consequences." They can't stop themselves and deep down they need to be stopped. They need it as much as we do

do you ever sometimes think "there is Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast on the Sony PSP" and remember for the faintest moment that somewhere out there we are being nurtured and protected

There's no way we could switch to the planned economy you'd need to radically overhaul the country and radically rebuild the state capacity we spent decades destroying. Imagine trying to run a wartime economy when your primary goal is making sure venture capitalists can still profit from water.

it is inarguable at this point that there will be not one day of peace not one second of returning to any workable international status quo until israel is disarmed entirely

(Picture of vampire) John Rentoul tweet: "This is what I mean. This is a conspiracy theory." over a screenshot of the guardian with words from Hannah Spencer, Green MP: "It's baffling to me that keir starmer and his cabinet can be so unimaginative and lacking in boldness at this point in time. All they need to do is look at how angry people are, look at how much their constituents are suffering, look at the mood of the country. Maybe they don't understand it. Maybe they just don't care. "

There's something particularly sickening about the way people in media & politics are so eager to take a term that describes a serious problem, like conspiracy theories or antisemitism, and then heedlessly warp the meaning in order to deploy it against their political opponents.

Blowing things up, kidnapping and killing foreign leaders, is good because it's Doing. Considering the consequences of Doing would be Thinking, which is weak and woke

I'm still of the opinion that we shouldn't be getting this company to run our healthcare system. Sorry if that offends.

All of the programs people assume are there waiting for desperate people are just like “Well we can’t give you any money, but we would like to make your life a lot worse for no reason.”

the strategy the british state are using with trans care is the exact same as with disability benefits; overwhelm undesirables in bureaucracy then definitively remove any positive outcomes, leading to excess death statistics visible from space

to me it rocks that this company that has never come within light-years of making money and has a bad product with zero practical use cases is the pivot point of the global economy because a bunch of embarrassing Burning Man dorks just decided it should be

I remember learning about the Hays Code in film school and how it made it so that any amoral protagonist had to meet karmic justice by the end of the film and going “wow, that’s really silly” and then once a week I log online and see people argue that we need stuff like that now or it’s problematic

Hard same, I know it's a marketing gimmick (I hope like most marketing gimmicks all this booktok shit evaporates in the cleansing light of day) but the "tropes checklist" is one of the worst things to happen to the public's relationship to books, every time I see it I feel the call of violence
