there are a ton of genres of literature where understanding *is* pretty necessary for appreciation, and I'm more used to those, so if I don't understand the work, I (pretty reasonably) figure it's not working for me and I should go do something else
maybe I should learn some markers!
An interesting perspective, thanks! When I bounce off literature, maybe sometimes what's happening is that I haven't picked up whatever genre expectation-setting signals the author/marketers/etc. have tried to send that say "this is experimental and understanding is not necessary"
Trying to explain how tech investment works for a non-tech audience and god, it's so stupid when you just write it out like that
The Artemis crew won at working remotely, the most remote of all time
fun fact: it works pretty well to swap the intro sequence music between "ST: ENT" and "Perfect Strangers"
What do you wish "social media"/the social parts of the internet could be, in your life? Like, what is the *good* thing you wish we had?
I've had all of these in different ways through different eras of my Internet participation - Usenet, the blogosphere of the 2000s, IRC, MetaFilter, Dreamwidth, Twitter and the Fediverse, probably some other venues
I think the 2000s blogosphere came closest to providing all of them at once, for me
Keeping apprised of the surprises, delights, sadnesses, triumphs, & observations in my friends' lives
Browsing the perspectives of people who share most of my values but live lives very different from mine
Sharing my observations and questions, sometimes vulnerably; getting connections & answers
I think most of the time when people say "you should sue," they really mean "in a just world, they wouldn't get away with treating you that way." Which is a noble sentiment, but in the world we live in, that's not how lawsuits work.
Anyone actually have some Svaha USA dresses? How do they hold up?
@rationallydense.bsky.social btw I remembered another short story to recommend to you

I have a strong desire to play indie games especially since I'm mostly homebound these days but the prices for a used steam deck are now astronomical I'm assuming bc of tariffs & datacenters hogging RAM, what can a boy do
You might think that a webcam would work when it is plugged into the monitor or the hub, given that the monitor and hub are both the same maker as it. But you would be wrong.
I wanna see a tech talk from a software dev in their 60s talking about what things are safe to forget when you hit the limits of your knowledge capacity vs what things are crucial to stay sharp on
It turns out a diverse group of highly trained humans working towards a shared goal can create miraculous results.
pet peeve: people making vast incorrect statements about "trad pub" that instantly reveal they do not read new books
oh, this is very important to know!!
I'm glad!

I think if you were willing to list what they get right alongside what they get wrong, it wouldn't come across as meanspirited

(I am NOT saying "I refute your wondering/want by saying this subgenre already exists"; I'm genuinely asking whether this is the sort of thing you would be interested in and that fits the description.)
Stuff like Beth McCabe's "A Thousand Ways" (action-y scifi about a teen on Mars solving a problem by hacking electronics) electricspec.com/Volume16/Iss... and Caleb Huitt's "The Hard Quarry" (solo asteroid miner outwitting pirates) cossmass.com/stories/the-... ?

it is fun to learn about infrastructure and when you do you can understand better how its failure modes work
