I expect Schumer and Jeffries will draw exactly the wrong lesson from this. They'll say it mobilized Republicans and we should tone it down for November. Instead of simply saying, "It mobilized Republicans and we still outnumbered them and won."

While Trump is an indictment of the GOP, to an extent, he is also an indictment of Democrats.

The party needs fighters. Hopefully this midterm, we see a new class of Dems ready and willing to kick fascist teeth.

- Finally, the Democratic Party needs to confront the ways the party itself is locking in gerontocracy. I work with teens—up-and-coming voters. “Out of touch” doesn’t BEGIN to describe the disconnect. What are pre-Internet politicians still doing in office?!?

Since that time, Democratic politicians have been relying on consultants instead of voters and on-the-ground organizers to shape their campaigns. They’re getting it ALL wrong, from cultural issues like trans and immigrant rights to bread-and-butter issues, both policy AND communication.

And I’m just going to keep saying it:

- Obama had been a community organizer, and when he ran in 2008, he created a nationwide organizing network, and he LISTENED to his people on the ground.

Unfortunately, when he left office, that network fell apart.

When Democratic voters vote out Democrats, Democratic politicians tell the voters they are wrong and ignore the message voters are sending them. THIS IS NOT WORKING FOR THEM. But they keep doing it. They refuse to look at their OWN mistakes but just keep blaming voters.

- The basic fact is, Republican voters have voted out their reps when their reps didn’t agree with them. If the GOP has been dragged to the extreme right, it’s because they also structurally contributed to the outcome, by politically empowering evangelical churches and contributing to RW media.

AI is generating an economic anxiety akin to the concerns over globalization in the 90s:

Will I lose my job?

Will the skills I have be obsolete in this new job market?

Will my kids even have a future?

Biden’s economy didn’t address these issues at all.

White supremacists expanded and amplified this message.

Meanwhile, Democrats under the Clinton formula of the 90s, and especially due to Citizens United, increasingly catered to their donor class on economic issues and promised economic reforms that rarely arrived.

- Democrats used to be the party of the working class of ALL races. The GOP launched the Culture Wars and provided scapegoats for the loss of class mobility for white working-class Americans: gays, Muslims and other non-Christians, feminists, immigrants, etc.

If progressives and leftists had done the same to Democrats, what are the “extreme” positions Democrats would be supporting today?

Universal healthcare?

Universal childcare?

More affordable college education?

A lower military budget?

A path to citizenship for DREAMers and other immigrants?

The GOP, OTOH, has been catering to their base since Reagan and have won 28 years of the Presidency versus Democrats’ 20 years during my lifetime.

Their extremists have dragged the party into the territory of white supremacist Christian nationalism, authoritarianism, and fascism.

- Democrats have a history of taking their base for granted. The “progressives” and “leftists” they keep bashing ARE the base. Democrat logic is, “Who else are these people going to vote for?”

Well, they’ll vote for you, or they’ll stay home and criticize you—and some of those criticisms will land.

What errors, you ask?

- Biden running for reelection when he said he wouldn’t, then having to drop out at the last minute.

- Harris given NOTHING as VP to set her up as Biden’s successor.
