"Silicon samples" are becoming more and more common in research and polling.
One problem: depending on the analytic decisions made, you can basically get these samples to show any effect you want.
The updated version of this preprint is now online!

Israel completely destroying your home – with all its history, family heirlooms and memories erased – is "bittersweet", reports the Guardian.
The new "negotiations" haven't even started yet and Israel has already broken the previous one
Can you believe that until now there were more genomes sequenced for the woolly mammoth than for living African elephants?
Today, we bring you the first genomic, continent-scale analyses of 232 high-quality genomes of both species, the savanna and forest elephant.

I joined Emma Vigeland on The Majority Report this week to talk about something that should be a national story but mostly isn't: a person is dying in ICE detention roughly every six days in 2026.

This lines up with work by Sachin Allums, finding that middle-schoolers who were AI-assisted on a mental creativity task performed worse on future tasks.

Changing times: "A stunning 40 Senate Democrats voted late Wednesday to block a U.S. weapons sale to Israel." Finally Some Dems are listening to the base. Add to that Netanyahu deserves to be in prison for his war crimes!! punchbowl.news/article/wash...
“Lebanese hilltop border towns and villages are now hard to recognise. Once characterised by their winding streets lined with stone buildings overlooking sweeping valleys, verified videos now show how they have turned grey from dust and debris of explosions.”

If the Court strikes down VRA districts, the easiest way to undo that damage would be to move to multi-member PR districts, which a future Congress can do by statute. Same or better minority representation results (e.g. black members in the South), no need for it to be explicitly race-conscious.
The plane to Ethiopia below is the second private jet owned by MAGA billionaires Joe Nakash and Eli Gindi to do ICE charters. The other one, which I wrote about last month, did a third-country removal to an Eswatini prison, plus ICE stops in Liberia and Ghana. gillianbrockell.com/more-maga-bi...

Likewise, the technology of text synthesis will not end of age of human thinking.

Arijit Chakravarty @arijitchakrav “Welp. The verdict is in from the first country to "let it rip", and it's not looking good.” Eurostat HLY figures showing dramatic decline for Sweden since 2020, start of Covid pandemic.
Sweden’s pre-pandemic HLY (healthy life years) figure of ~73 years of age was exceptionally high by European standards: roughly 7–9 years above the EU average.
They were an outlier allowing COVID to “burn through the population,” and this is a dramatic decline that warrants serious investigation.
Fewer people think that it's a crisis than before, but the linked study still shows a 49% plurality saying it's getting worse.

Something especially intense has been happening at AROCC since January.

I’m watching the new essential film, Ghosts in the Machine, featuring many esteemed colleagues of mine, and noting how many of the great men scientists making claims about the ability for machines to mimic humanity also denied the humanity of women in myriad ways.
i think if you tweet "a whole civilization will die tonight" you shouldn't go to the hague, the hague should get to come to you
AROCC is one of 169 holding and staging facilities that ICE Ieft out from its public detention reports in 2025.

We know more only thanks to FOIA pressure.
“'I’ve never experienced anything like this in my entire life,' the congresswoman said, fighting back tears.
"She described the way people were laying down inside as “like sardines.”
“'It is frightening in there,' she said. 'It is disgusting'..."

If you want to help with that, and can bring research and a level-headed attitude, one way you can help is starting or expanding a Wikipedia page on any of these detention sites. A list of the more publicly reported ones is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Carwil/ICEtable
My motivation is that every family and community member who is tracking someone through the crackdown should be able to find out about where they are being held, see who has shining light on it, and learn from reporting on it…
Two very noisy high-resolution bar charts showing a low level of uncounted individuals under the last 90 days of the Biden administration and a much larger number under Trump in fall 2025. The graph is broken down by colors to show type of facilities.
The FOIA'ed data show that around a 1,000 more people go to bed in ICE facilities each night than it reports, a 2% discrepancy whose meaning is unclear.
Separately, hold facilities and a small handful of dedicated detention centers dominate the facilities left off the list altogether.
And also a series of new and extant Federal and state facilities from an El Paso tent structure to so-called Alligator Alcatraz.

At the heart of the underreporting are ERO field offices, whose holding cells are not made for overnight detention, but which have been become de facto detention centers since June 2025.

A daily chart of the unreported population of detained immigrants, with a weekly fluctuation and a long plateau around 500 until late January 2025, a new stable level in the 1,000 to 1,500 range, a dramatic rise from May to August 2025, and two distinct peaks in August and October at over 3,500.
Over the first eight months of the Trump administration, we went from hundreds of detainees not counted to 3,500 on a typical night.
Map of unmatched facilities in FY25 A map of the United States and surrounding territories show several hundred color-coded circles denoting locations.
Mapping ICE's un/under-reported detention sites:
The official count of immigrants detained by ICE passed 73,000 in January. But in the rush to expand several thousand more are being held each night in sites not include on the agency's public reports.
