Hey Baltimore/DC folks, I'm hosting a FREE tarot workshop/get-together Thursday, April 30 at Golden West Cafe in Baltimore. Bring a deck or two, some friends, enjoy tarot-themed cocktails and great food (lots of vegan options!), and say hello! 6-9m!

Inside the lives of astronauts’ families
Tracy Scott’s dad walked on the moon. Now, as a sociologist, she studies the lives and families of other Apollo-era astronauts.
I heard only a snippet of this @scifri.bsky.social interview last week and just now read through the transcript. Great piece!

Been working on this for a while. Have to say it was probably one of the more challenging datasets I have processed due to the delicate combination of LRGB and narrowband data required to tease out the colours and fine structures in the nebula as well as the deep background detail.
About the image:
This deep view of the Helix Nebula combines light from traditional LRGB filters together with specific narrow Ha and OIII wavelengths to reveal the colourful and complex structures of this magnificent planetary nebula.
The Helix Nebula is located around 700 light years away towards the constellation Aquarius. It is one of the nearest planetary nebulae and therefore appears quite large and detailed although its surface brightness is rather low.
The nebula is the result of a sun-like star shedding its outer layers during its final stages of evolution. Several rapidly expanding shells of dust and gas surrounds the intensely blue stellar remnant in the centre, giving the appearance of a giant eye in space. The inner and outer shells were expelled from the star approximately 6,500 and 12,000 years ago respectively and are expanding at a speed of 32-40 kilometres per second.
The brightest ring is currently two light years across, while the faint outer structures extend to a diameter of four light years - the same distance as between the Sun and the nearest other star; Alpha Centauri.

I keep rewatching this video and it doesn’t stop blowing me away. It’s the cheapness- for lack of a better word- of it. The honesty of trying to make your phone capture a good image with a dirty window in the way. The fact it doesn’t look cinematic or processed. It’s just so fucking REAL.

A new picture of NGC 3147 from Hubble, comprised of data collected very recently, some of which was taken just a couple of weeks ago. This is in near-infrared and visible light, so the dust lanes look extra reddish. There's a certain transparency to the disk showing reddish background galaxies that I quite like, thanks to the near-infrared wavelengths in the red channel. It's one of those galaxies that fits nicely within the Hubble footprint, so this is a nearly complete picture of the brighter parts of the whole object.
I enhanced the saturation and clarity of the whole galaxy, and the center dust lanes have been greatly sharpened. The small hole left where the chip gaps intersected near the nucleus was filled with data cloned 180° from the other side of the nucleus.

Just a thought: How about we stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential?

Adding insult to injury, I think the duck might be a goose.

Cassini peered through Titan's thick atmosphere and captured its surface. The darker areas are vast hydrocarbon sand dunes and seas. Up north, some of Titan's lakes and seas are visible. Down below, a portion of Titan's hydrocarbon sand dunes can be seen.
This view was taken by Cassini's camera system, the Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) on June 08, 2014 and received on Earth June 10, 2014. The camera was pointing toward TITAN at approximately 981,809 miles (1,580,069 kilometers) away, and the images were taken using the continuum band filter.

NASA video release July 12, 2011
Our solar system's most distant major planet, Neptune, has arrived at the same location in space where it was first discovered 165 years ago. To commemorate the event, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has taken images of the blue-green giant planet.
Neptune was first discovered 165 years ago and now has completed one full orbit around the Sun. To celebrate this milestone, astronomers used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 to take a closer look at the planet. Images reveal high- altitude clouds composed of methane ice crystals. The methane absorbs red light resulting in the planet's aqua color. The clouds look pink because they are reflecting near-infrared light.
This video sequence compiles data from Hubble's observations of Neptune to show the blue-green planet rotating on its tilted axis. A day on Neptune is 16 hours long, and Hubble took images of the planet every four hours.
