Days before the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, the Miles Brothers captured a thriving Market Street. On April 18, 1906, everything changed. The brothers returned—and filmed what remained.

Yep, but no spoilers 😉
Lulu in the east end!
One of the most infamous unfinished film in cinema history, the newly reconstructed 4K restoration of Erich von Stroheim's QUEEN KELLY screens 4/25 & 4/26 at brunch at Nitehawk Williamsburg
Holy crap the Queen Kelly restoration was wild af. They returned it to a silent film and used Stroheim's script to fun out the unfinished ending. Did not expect it to be so damn funny and lurid. Highly recommended to all silent film curious folks. See it with a crowd if u can.
Books Read April 2026 #3: Pamela Hutchinson: The Curse of Queen Kelly. I love books about individual films and @pamhutch.bsky.social is one of our finest writers on cinema. She tells the whole doomed story through three leading principals: Erich von Stroheim, Gloria Swanson and Joseph P. Kennedy.
I'll be performing at the TCM Classic Film Festival again this month! My 7th time, and this year it'll be for Marion Davies in THE PATSY (1928)

Seeing silent films live is pure magic.
The best way to see @milestonefilms.bsky.social QUEEN KELLY is on the big screen. Even better, on the glorious screen of the Castro with Eli Denson conducting his beautiful new score on the opening night of San Francisco Silent Film Festival this May.

“Elvira speaks to us like a contemporary because of her films’ carnality and sensuality. The texture of silent film makes you feel so close to that sensuality.”

“Memory needs to be kept alive, it needs to be actualized.”
For this week’s Silent Sundays I spoke with documentarian Valerio Ciriaci about his new documentary ELVIRA NOTARI: BEYOND SILENT, which is a portrait of Italy's first female director.
