The biggest machine in science: inside the fight to build the next giant particle collider The European physics laboratory CERN is planning to build a mega collider by 2070. Critics say the plan could lead to its ruin.

A must read: @castelvecchi.bsky.social's great deep dive on CERN's battle to build the next mega-collider. Many physicists are critical of plans "because it will take so long to come to fruition and because sinking resources into it could close off alternative ideas"⚛️🧪 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Invading Canada Is Not Advisable We’ve tried before. It didn’t work out.

“There are, as Donald Trump and Don Corleone might put it, two ways of doing this: the easy way and the hard way,” writes @eliotacohen.bsky.social.

When it comes to making Canada the 51st state, neither is advisable: theatln.tc/6oAICykE

The majority of rural hospitals are teetering on the brink of closing. This cut to their reimbursements will finish most of them off leaving small towns having to drive to regional medical centers for routine care.

After an Alzheimer's diagnosis, a new job gave a father 'dignity' and 'purpose' When Paul Cotter's father began to show signs of early-onset Alzheimer's disease, he lost job after job. Then, a small local company offered him a role that helped rebuild his sense of purpose.

Of one thing, teenage writer Danica Popovic is certain: as powerful as AI may be, it cannot give voice to the complexity of human life. Only human-made art can. After all, pain and uncertainty aren’t problems technology can solve. thewalrus.ca/at-3-a-m-i-turne...

"4.5 million Canadians tuned in to CBC News Network from February 1 through 3, making it the most-watched English-language Canadian news network.

When the country was reeling from the threats from US President Trump, who did we turn to? We turned to the CBC - our trusted national broadcaster.

GOP Gambles on Budget Plan That Helps the Rich and Cuts Aid to the Poor The House Republican budget plan would pair tax cuts that primarily benefit the rich with cuts to programs that help the poor.

News Analysis: The GOP won the last election in no small part because of its new appeal with working-class voters. But the economic agenda Republicans are now putting together would by and large help rich Americans, all while teeing up cuts to programs that provide health care and food to the poor.

Oof sorry but no… I lived in the Netherlands for a year and healthcare was horrible. Got a broken hand misdiagnosed at the ER, was told to take paracetamol for an 8” hematoma on my leg… plus we paid for it. It’s part funded by every person, beyond taxes. The Scandinavian countries do it well however

Each day represents a chance for us to hold hope through the chaos… see the light in the dark… stand in integrity… and to be kind, love fiercely, and forgive. This does not mean that we should back down from standing up for humanity or the planet. It starts at home and spreads

I’m in Canada for a week. I wish Americans could only watch the CBC as their news source for the next year. So far, I’ve heard Trump referenced as racist, ignorant, blustering, & lying. I’ve been watching for an hour.

Damien Kurek, the Conservative critic for Canadian Heritage, said in a statement Wednesday that Poilievre has been having a "national conversation" with Canadians about defunding the CBC for years.

"Common sense Conservatives will defund the CBC while preserving funding to ensure francophone Canadians continue to receive news services," Kurek said.

A slogan is not a national conversation, and you can't de-fund English CBC and leave Radio-Canada intact and able to function. The infrastructure is integrated, and they're lying to claim that they can do just that.

CDC Data Are Disappearing The agency has already removed scientific data from public view. More could follow.

CDC data’s “explicit purpose” is to guide researchers toward the places and people who most need attention, Patrick Sullivan, a former CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service officer, said. “It’s hard to understand how this benefits health.”
