@energylawprof.bsky.social was quoted in @startribune.com about the effectiveness of the city of Minneapolis charging a carbon fee. Some experts say the fee is too small to significantly cut pollution and will have little effect on climate change.

🏗️ Permitting ourselves to build: A Quick Q&A with … energy policy expert James Coleman 'We had an incredible infrastructure boom in the postwar years, along with an economic boom, and we've been spending down that infrastructure inheritance ever since.'

"If we want to continue economic growth and allow more energy for things like electrification of cars...we are going to need to have a lot more energy sources," says @energylawprof.bsky.social in conversation with TPN member James Pethokoukis.

Bigger picture is the world’s most important bilateral trade relationships and bilateral energy relationships are U.S.-Canada and U.S.-Mexico. Energy trade isn’t just oil—it’s gas & power too. A big deal already but retaliation or an extended disruption would make it even bigger.

Midwest & Rockies get their crude imports from Canada and don’t have easy other options for crude. Likely to see the biggest impacts on prices at the pump.

There’s a lot more on IRA subsidies, LNG, minerals, etc. Here’s NEPA/CEQ:
“To expedite and simplify permitting within 30 days of the date of this order, the Chairman of CEQ shall provide guidance on implementing the National Environmental Policy Act and propose rescinding CEQ’s NEPA regulations”

“clean energy has to become much cheaper and more abundant to beat fossil fuels in the marketplace”
One of many excellent points from @arnabdatta.bsky.social

1 year ago 6 1 0 0

Haha yes — point is just that ghg impact is better if there’s less leaking, venting, flaring, and limiting those is more expensive when gas prices are lower because local production is outstripping local takeaway capacity

State Energy Cartels | Cardozo Law Review

Crucially, this also helps maximize long-term value of resource and reduces flaring. (Natural gas has big GHG benefits if it can be transported to places that would otherwise burn coal, but not if too much is stranded & flared.) cardozolawreview.com/state-energy...
