I have a lot of sympathy with your comment but still think it’s a bit unfair: Ganesh does “get” that the EU is serious about integration, defence and growth - I read his column as a gentle mocking of those who have repeatedly asserted that the EU is about to collapse.

This is right, but I'd go further: winning the domestic argument on the free movement of people is what's needed to unlock anything further than the reset. That means Starmer has to repudiate many of his own arguments on migration.
