NEW REPORT: The abolition of NHS England presents a rare opportunity to reset the centre of the NHS, but it carries significant risks.
Nuffield Trust and IfG researchers have spoken to experts involved in current and past reforms and assessed historical examples of major restructures.

NEW: There's much that the English NHS can learn from other countries' experience of shifting care from hospitals into communities.
Here @sjanereed.bsky.social sets out the lessons from what's been happening in Denmark and Ireland👇 www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/mo...
It's been a landmark day for the NHS. But what does it all mean?
We asked @becksfisher.bsky.social, Director of Research and Policy
Today's vote means assisted dying is likely for England & Wales. It is time to answer the hard questions about how to address concerns through its implementation - and face the gaps in end of life care MPs highlighted

NEW: Ending care worker recruitment from abroad is hugely risky for a #socialcare sector facing a vacancies void, and reforms to make care jobs more attractive for UK workers won’t kick in for years.

6/ And of course brilliant Comms colleagues, @pk101.bsky.social @celiaconso.bsky.social @rowandennison.bsky.social @mpjones.bsky.social @markgdayan.bsky.social @rowandennison.bsky.social @leonoramerry.bsky.social and many more 🙏
5/ This work is part of a huge team effort including @sarahscobie.bsky.social, @daviesmiranda1.bsky.social, @rachelhutchings.bsky.social and Steph Kumpunen -- with more analysis to come, so do stay tuned.
5/ The @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social holds a neutral position on the legalisation of assisted dying, and we hope this work offers an objective view of the evidence from other countries as the UK consider its own path.
Thread with key findings below:

4/ These differences aren't just procedural -- they affect how individuals access and experience services, what roles and responsibilities staff hold, and the health and social care system at large.
3/ This includes many things like:
◾ The extent to which assisted dying is publicly funded and integrated into broader health and care services
◾ Which staff can be involved, and the training they require
◾ The processes people must go through to give consent
◾ How compliance is monitored
etc.
2/ A wealth of international evidence has already been drawn on to inform the debate in the UK, but it has tended to focus on a narrow set of countries or issues regarding eligibility.
Part of why we did this work is to highlight the broader operational and practical differences that also matter.
1/ New analysis with @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social colleagues today on Assisted Dying, and what we can learn from other countries as the UK considers legalisation.

Multiple sources tell me AHRQ is about to be destroyed. A terrible loss for our country.
As NHS England’s chiefs sit down with local trust chairs and chief execs to discuss a “financial re-set”, a quick reminder of how difficult the financial situation is in the NHS right now. A short thread >>
Great question and something we’ve been looking at closely at @nuffieldtrust.bsky.social with more research coming out this year — and not only Denmark, but other systems that have had similar efforts to reorient care towards the community
In pride of place! ❤️
Welp. Vaccine access is only the start of what’s at stake.
RFK Jr.'s HHS Secretary confirmation means he'll oversee Medicare, Medicaid/CHIP, and Marketplace health coverage as well as crucial public health agencies like the CDC, NIH, & FDA. He was confirmed despite making it clear in his hearings that he doesn't understand the programs he'll be overseeing.
Our new analysis out today looks at the deteriorating finances of NHS trusts. NHS trusts consume over 75% of the English NHS budget, so if you want to know how the NHS is coping with its current funding, your starting point should be the doubling of the trust overspend to £1.2bn by March 2024 >>
Chuffed to be speaking today at Ireland’s National Health Summit on how to shift services from hospital to the community.
Like the UK, Ireland has embarked on a 10-year plan to reorient its health and care system towards prevention and the community — so lots to learn as well 👀 #HealthSummit25
