Overcrowding, bad (no) medical care, not enough food, filth — these are average and expected in this country’s jails and prisons everywhere.
ICE detention conditions aren’t below the norm — that’s the norm. That’s what 2 million ppl and their families experience every day.

JUST IN: Governor Abigail Spanberger last night returned this bill to lawmakers with an amendment request (rather than signing it).
Her amendment would clarify that sheriffs/jails are allowed to honor ICE detainers, i.e. warrantless ICE requests to keep someone in jail beyond their release.

"The right’s characterization of higher education is a fiction. Students across the ideological spectrum feel free to express themselves, think their education is worth the cost and don’t think their views are silenced." Only 3% of Republican students feel out of place on campus for their views.

Just to spell this out…
You need ID to vote in Kansas. For most, that means a driver’s license.
Kansas has canceled valid licenses of people who’d updated their gender marker. Many of those affected will need new licenses to be able to vote.
A new license costs $16.

just got an email about the CBS x The Free Press x Paramount (sponsored by Bank of America) Bari Weiss extravaganza that UVA is hosting & promoting. really embarrassing if you ask me. people who do not care one bit about the brutal realities of this world because they're benefiting from it.
let's be clear about what's happening: donald trump and benjamin netanyahu, whose countries have been committing genocide in gaza since 2023, unilaterally started a war with iran, and are now threatening genocide there.
A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!
God help us.

NEW: Like many of you, I found the revelations about César Chávez’s sexual abuse of Dolores Huerta, Ana Murguia, and Debra Rojas absolutely devastating. For @prismreports.org, I wrote about the importance of grappling with Chávez’s true legacy—both as as a civil rights leader and a rapist.

or just any good writing from the left on prediction markets.....
is there anyone who's written intelligently from the left on this idea that "markets," prediction or otherwise, can produce good information because they incentivize people with knowledge to act on it?
Every so often I think about how I had to fight to get the phrase "persistent economic inequity," in a NYT story because they wanted to use "trapped in poverty" instead, and it had to go to the standards editor because they thought persistent economic inequity might be biased
The community has been “shaken to its foundation,” said Monica Ramirez, the founder of Justice for Migrant Women. She and other leaders are now trying to push forward the farmworker movement and continue the work that many women — not just Chavez — spearheaded.

And more from Dolores Huerta: "I have never identified myself as a victim, but I now understand that I am a survivor — of violence, of sexual abuse, of domineering men who saw me, and other women, as property, or things to control."
after Charlie Kirk died pundits like Ezra Klein praised his "hard conversations" with students.
under the higher ed backlash he helped start, the real hard-to-have conversations are about gender, race, sexuality, protest.

The extent to which every single one of these guys has absolutely no idea what the fuck they're talking about is frankly stunning. You should be embarrassed to go out in public and spout shit like this. It should scar your soul and make you weep in shame, but that requires introspection, so...shit.
once at a DC salon during trump's first term I said that I grew up adjacent to TEA partiers and Christian fundamentalists and yes, racism is and was a big part of the whole deal... the entire room full of beltway insiders acted like *I* was the out-of-touch one
we expelled them, blacklisted them, called cops to beat the shit out of them, and deported them. why aren't they protesting again? i'm very smart
