Consider: drawing characters directly on photographs? Then you get the background without needing to draw it. You can slap a few filters, maybe edit a bit and then it'll fit into the piece

Arms! Stuff that wraps around the arm (like floral patterns) are always cool. For something smaller, you could also do something subtle under the collar bone (see attached)
