Comment from Youhei Matsui (one of Enstars’ main lyricists) Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Enstars—Knights unit songs! This unit has fought, music as their swords and their creed as a rallying flag, to press forward with their idea of what it means to be an idol, even at the cost of getting hurt. I think that’s why you can feel a sort of pride from their voices as they do their best to be true to their fans. The lyrics I’ve written so far have been born from the messages behind their chivalry. Silent Oath The princess resides in a sacred, untouchable castle deep in the forest, where she cannot see the lake or the world filled with conflict from her window. Her knight wishes for her to only ever look at the beautiful starry sky above, and though he is not permitted to look at the shining moon in the sky, he isn’t stopped from looking at its reflection in the water. He then puts a lock on his feelings and throws the key into the lake. I conceived this song as a love song unique to Knights’ vision for themselves as idols and their idea of chivalry; the song isn’t about requited love, but instead uses the ripples of the water’s surface as a metaphor for the movements of the knight’s heart. Fight for Judge The “king” once suffered greatly in his battles, yet still dons an armor of tough words to protect his soul because he can’t help but create these wonderful songs even if they must be used as weapons. From there, I was inspired to make the lyrics about removing one’s armor and instead asserting oneself with one’s soul bared. Making someone submit to you means you are stealing their future in a way, and you can only hone your heart’s sword if you’re fully prepared to do that. I feel that this was the sort of ritual Judgment was for Knights.
Article of Faith The title “Article of Faith” encapsulates Knights’ will to show the pride and dignity they need to call themselves members of this unit. They truly become knights once they learn to trust one another. While each member is a “lord” of their own individuality, this sort of mutual investiture is what is able to bind them together, and that’s the idea I put into the lyrics. This comes out very strongly in the line that goes, “No more wandering alone”. The song is also a proclamation that, even though as knights they support their king, their loyalty goes to the “voice that calls” for them. Grateful Allegiance While Article of Faith is a proclamation of loyalty, this song is a direct message. On the other side of the days they spent fighting for survival, the knights have found “someone” whom they wish to serve: the fans, whose unending belief in them as idols has solidified the bonds between the unit members. The song is meant to express their gratitude to its fullest extent toward the fans who gave meaning to their ways of life, so I made sure the lyrics were straightforward and simple. Little Romance The fantasy Knights create here is depicted as a dream the princess has of her youth while taking a nap. Even in the dream, the singer declares he is her loyal knight and vows to always be at her side, which could also make it a prologue of sorts to Silent Oath. With Ritsu as the center, the words “We'll make you smile where the sunlight touches” leave an even stronger impression. I see it as the first song since Knights the Phantom Thief (and first of those to come after) to focus specifically on how Knights wish to show their idol appeal.
Mystic Fragrance The idea for this song was Knights making a song for a commercial, so I used a lot of perfume-related words, especially in the chorus. I wanted the lyrics to bring attention to how Arashi, who is in the center here, has this attractiveness that turns heads and lures you in, like a sweet fragrance wafting from Knights. The other motif used was Swan Lake, a ballet in which both Odette and Odile are played by the same dancer—an idea that I combined with a perfume’s scent slowly changing from its top notes to its base notes. “Mystic”, aside from its actual meaning, also sounds similar to “Mist”, which to me alludes to a misting of perfume and may also bring up images of a swan dancing like a mirage atop a misty lake. Lakes are also a motif in Silent Oath. Coruscate Breeze Leo sings as the center for this song, whose melody makes you think of the freedom of summer and the blowing of a cool breeze. I focused the lyrics around the idea that the members are all happy that Leo can express himself just the way he is. Beyond the lines airplanes leave in the sky, there lies an endless expanse of sky, and even there the wind still blows. Knights’ sound can soar beyond its bounds, and I’m certain both the unit members and fans have been waiting for that. The idea is that, on the other side of that boundary, there is a future as bright as the sun waiting to be discovered. Wonderful Happiness In this song, they’re a little more authentic to themselves in the sense that they, as knights, have more informal moments and are willing to invite their princess to spend those moments with them. Though their vow to always provide their princess with beautiful dreams hasn’t changed, they also have this tiny, selfish wish to show her that there are even more wonderful things in this world, and to be their more authentic selves as they do it. Though they can’t become “a prince on a white horse” because they’re knights, they can play the part of a prince for a single day.
Luminous Crown From the past, to the present, and into the future: This song is a vow to always keep the pride and memory of the Knights Leo passed on to Tsukasa—likened to a crown—as a jewel each member adorns themselves with. These feelings are hidden in shadows, regrets, and misunderstandings, and only huddling close for comfort will lead to partings one day. So instead, they decide to use their pain itself as a bond joining them together so they can live on as knights. I centered the lyrics around the idea that they are blessing each other’s strong determination to make that happen. We’ll be “Knights” A song about Knights’ beginnings. The name given to them on a whim eventually drives them to take up the sword, like it was their destiny all along. If there’s no other way to find hope other than to dive headfirst into tragedy, then they’ll keep fighting to protect the one and only thing they’ll hold dear—I wanted to capture that determination in the lyrics. The short lines from “No need to know what awaits us” to “We’ll be Knights” are sung as solos to hint at the fact that they are all looking in different directions and will soon become the “individualists” they’re described to be for a while. I tried to weave in what their positions they were in during that time as much as possible.
Another thing I wanted to release today: Youhei Matsui, who has written the lyrics for many Knights songs, released an entire essay on his lyrics ideas on Twitter and it goes crazy
Apologies for any weird wording/mistakes as I did this one really quickly 😇
