Don't think I've ever been as terrified in all the Trump security crises. As @pkrugman.bsky.social said, "Itās the most astonishing, awful thing that Iāve ever seen, and weāve all seen a lot of awful things." Mainly as cope, and to teach it, I keep asking why. 1/ open.substack.com/pub/paulkrug...

š§µFeels like shouting into the void, but it is essential to note that the Trump/Rubio gutting of the State Department and blowtorching of US diplomatic capacity and credibility is an accelerant to this spiraling war and will seriously undercut US/allied efforts to pick up the pieces after. 1/

Understanding this paradox and its drivers is essential for navigating an increasingly dangerous nuclear landscape. Our paper discusses how global publics see compatibilities between deterrence and disarmament and assesses what the complexity in public views means for policy.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, which views deterrence and disarmament as irreconcilable opposites, our data reveal something far more complex. People around the world embrace both simultaneously. These apparent contradictions arenāt confined to a confused minority. Theyāre the global norm.
We conducted a comprehensive survey of global attitudes toward nuclear weapons. Across 24 countries on six continentsāfrom nuclear powers like the United States and China to non-nuclear-armed states like Brazil and Nigeriaāwe asked more than 27,000 people what they thought about the bomb.
In this new open access article in @poppublicsphere.bsky.social, co-authored by @laurensukin.bsky.social and @herzogsm.bsky.social, we present evidence that challenges key assumptions about nuclear politics.
