When asked if they would vote for their province to begin the process of separating from Canada and seeking a new agreement to define its future relationship with the country, approximately three in 10 residents of both Alberta (29%) and Quebec (31%) say yes. This includes those who say they would definitely or probably vote yes, and those who say they would lean toward voting yes.

However, new Ipsos research which "stress-tested" these sentiments by introducing real-world consequences reveals that actual committed support for separation is roughly half these levels in both provinces, with only 15 to 16% of Albertans and Quebecers maintaining their support after considering possible costs. This means that for roughly half of separatist supporters in both provinces, independence is more a political message than a plan they are prepared to endure costs to achieve.

To set the record straight, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said today that about 30 per cent, or 1M, Albertans support independence. This is false. The latest IPSOS poll found about 15 per cent support for separation from Canada when those polled were informed about the "real-world consequences."

Teachers and unions were first (Bill 2).

Trans Albertans are next (Bill 9).

The UCP's 2025 AGM Resolutions reveal a much longer list of folks whose rights are at risk from the party's use of the notwithstanding clause.

For those keeping score, the premier:
🔵has already started picking her voters (through voter suppression laws).
🔴wants to choose who can run for office (only "serious" candidates qualify).
⚪️now wants to decide which MLAs deserve to be recalled (and which ones get to keep their seats).

I post a lot on ABlawg. Some of it pretty dry & arcane oil & gas law
But this is far more imp & shd be of wider interest. It deals with how an Aussie coal mining company was able to manipulate AER decision-making to shield the company’s project from public review. #abpoli

The GOP’s “Big Beautiful Bill” is Robin Hood in reverse: it takes from the poor to give to the rich.SNAP (used to be Food Stamps…which Tabby and I used back in 1972) is gone. Medicare is going.

Alberta Stands Apart in Canada. Now It Plans a Long-Shot Bid to Secede.

“It’s hard to overstate how central oil is to Ms. Smith’s move to engineer the conditions for a separation referendum.”

Smith is making international headlines again! This will be great for investor confidence!

(It won’t)

Last week the AER approved Northback's application for new coal exploration on Grassy Mtn.
That approval killed any hope that Northback might have for compensation.
On the w/e premier Smith said Northback wd not be able to operate an open pit mine.
This revives Northback's compensation claims. 1/2

It should be obvious. Smith is claiming that lowering the threshold for referendums makes things more democratic.

But at the same time she’s doing everything she can to strangle democracy.

Watch for this Canada, especially from Smith.

'when politicians successfully bait the courts on a popular issue, the resulting erosion of checks & balances spills over into other domains, enabling the executive to wield power in much more unpopular ways it.'

I'm often asked: What motivates Danielle Smith to do the radical things she does?

After all, many of her actions fly in the face of public opinion, the constitution, conservative ideology, and her own public commitments.

I used to equivocate.

I'm about ready to call it.🧵

With Bill 54, Danielle Smith gives the Republican Party of Alberta (RPA) resources (dark 💰) and a clearer path to a referendum.

This runs contrary to her public commentary about using a referendum to prevent them from growing.

And those comments only give the RPA more ammunition and legitimacy.

Opinion: Alberta’s wishy-washy dance with separatism will beggar the province Danielle Smith’s Alberta government wants a separatism referendum but it doesn’t want to own it. It wants to be pushed into it

"Let’s be honest about what this is. The government doesn’t want to own the referendum. It wants to be pushed into it, to blame the people for asking, to stay a step removed from the consequences. That’s not governance. That’s cowardice."

Far worse than embarrassment. The govt wd be dysfunctional on key security issues. #abpoli #canpoli

Premier plans post-election panel to gauge Albertans’ appetite for referendum Premier Danielle Smith says she is striking a post-mortem election panel to give Albertans the chance to raise issues they might want put to a referendum.

Two months ago this wd not have been on the agenda.
Now that Smith is worried that the CPC will not take office it comes to the fore.
Another Trumpian version of questioning (in advance) the legitimacy of the election & building the case for the 51st state.
Beware the enemy within.
