Germans did not stop the early signs of fascism exercised by the nazis because they never saw them before and could not predict what they would eventually become.

I appreciate all the people recommending the Shock Doctrine. I've been thinking about what makes Trump's use of these tactics a little different.

In recent decades, shock tactics were used mainly to rapidly impose neoliberal economic policies. But what Trump is doing goes way beyond that.

Eat the Doughnut: Why Social Media Threatens Democracy Former Silicon Valley giants recently united to alert us to the addictive, anti-democratic dangers of Facebook, Google, and Twitter. Here's what you need to know.

I wrote 'Eat the Donut: Why Social Media Threatens Democracy' in 2018 and it is quite chilling, IMO, to read it now. The warnings were all there in terms of what we were barrelling toward. #disinformation #misinformation #socialmedia #X #Facebook #Meta

As a politics writer I know that the legitimisation of fascism & it's symbolism remains a vital step in sanitizing its appeal and reach. The Olympic Games brochure 1936 (I own a copy) is one powerful example. The inauguration this week was targeted for use in a similar way. #elonmusk #inauguration

Can someone concatenate those two moves in some sort of heat of the moment frenzy without realizing what they mean? Maybe he is a Julius Cesar fan??

Important to remember, few to no Germans who at first cheered for Hitler considered themselves fascists, only until they were shown they could just really get away with anything, and that, oh boy, they liked.
