If you can get yourself to Working Culture Bread (and can have gluten / sugar), I highly recommend it. All the loaves and premade sammies and baked goods are incredible! 🥐🍞🍪

Tabby tuxedo cat laying down facing the camera on a gold yellow cushion. He has a white ‘mask’ over his snoot, pink nose and light aqua eyes. His little white socks and chest bib are quite dashing. He’s outrageously cute!

Bertie continues to make himself at home. Just the best guy!

Pippin is not wrong and also I feel so bad for that cat who prob just wanted to do a morning perimeter check + then stay inside for the day snuggled up. (Also that would be so annoying while you’re working!)

Literally no one follows the bylaw so no need to overturn it. We have a roster of fluffy buds traipsing through our yard. The fun part is naming them, the not-fun part is our yard is a bird buffet! Cats past + present: Hamburger, Earl, Tuxie, Stubby, Creamsicle, Garfield, Tabby Tuxie, Lucy/Taco.

Overhead wide-angle photo in portrait layout. There is a a long tabby tuxedo cat lying on his back with his tummy and face looking up at the camera; his back legs are stretched loooong. He is lying length-wise on the legs of a person covered by a heavy wool blanket with black, yellow, red and green stripes who is seated on a couch with legs straight out on an ottoman. The cat looks very silly and adorable and is perfect.

Please admire my son. This was yesterday which also happened to be the two week anniversary of Bertie coming home with us! I think he’s settling in nicely. Photo by my person.

Part of me wonders if the wood chip coverage makes the area more appealing for the crows to root around in. I’m keeping an eye on another boulevard that we just installed native plants into that has a darker, finer mulch which so far has been unbothered by corvids.

For spring germinating seeds I’m looking at Clarkia/ Farewell to Spring, Sea Blush, more Woolly Sunflower. Oh, and every one of the Howell’s Pussytoes got destroyed. So sad!

I’ve snuck in some Coastal Mugwort + Entire-leaved Gumweed seedlings and so far they haven’t been uprooted. On hand I have seeds for several native plants + have ordered more to broadcast in the hopes of getting some good coverage this season.

Photo of a long boulevard planting area covered with wood chips. Almost all of the plants have been yanked out by unrelenting corvids leaving holes of exposed dirt. So frustrating!

Close up of planting area with wood chips and dirt. Plant plugs have been pulled up and out of the ground and left to dry out, presumably by crowd and ravens.

It looks like most of the Roemer’s Fescue, Graceful Cinquefoil and Field Chickweed is toast along with a decent chunk of Nodding Onions, Yarrow and Canada Goldenrod. The shrubs are hanging in (Common Snowberry, Kinnikinnick, Tall Oregon Grape).

Things are off to a bumpy spring start at the site. We’ve had a fairly significant amount of plant loss due to corvids pulling out the plant plugs in search of chafer beetle grubs. I’ve replanted as best I can about five times now.

🚨 New friend alert 🚨 Meet Bertie! He’s about 5 y/o, full of affection, playfulness, vocalizations + purrs. We lost our old cat a couple of years ago (RIP Kaz) + are now ready to welcome a new guy. He’s settled in so well over the past week; we’re so pleased!

Exclusive: Designer Dan Pearson’s guided tour of his own garden at Hillside
Exclusive: Designer Dan Pearson’s guided tour of his own garden at Hillside YouTube video by Gardens Illustrated

Gardening could easily slip into a sad bourgeoisie bullshit (look at the French), but Dan Pearson really connects with the land and makes it beautiful. It is no surprise that he is also the only white landscape designer and horticulturalist who has been consistently vocal about Palestinian genocide.

It’s International Long Covid Awareness Day.

One of the best things you can do to support people with Long Covid is wear a mask (ideally a respirator like an N95).

Masks break chains of transmission.

They prevent infection.

The only way to avoid Long Covid is to avoid Covid!

I went to the March class and it so fun- first in-person exercise class since early 2020. Masked, windows open, air filter running. Safe + friendly!

This Nanaimo project already destroyed a rare Garry oak ecosystem during site clearing afaik. The nearby area is slated for similar dvlpmt potentially wiping out pockets of rare native species. Vegetation surveys aren’t done or req’d so we just continue to lose beautiful + essential ecosystems. 🫠

Now we just need two rain barrels and several hundred feet of irrigation tubing. Is anyone a benevolent rich donor who wants to buy these supplies for the boulevard before things get hot and crispy in the summer? #nanaimo

Photo of a stark street, boulevard, sidewalk and flat roofed commercial building. The boulevard has one large leafless tree waiting for spring. The boulevard is planted out with tiny native plant plugs surrounded by wood chip mulch. There is blue sky with clouds in the background.

After work yesterday, I hustled down to the boulevard to get the piled up soil + wood chip evenly distributed back around the tree pit. Planted out an additional 20+ native plants: Douglas Aster, Roemer’s Fescue, Field Chickweed + Howell’s Pussytoes.

Working in a pandemic world is just listening to colleagues say “there must be something going around” on a weekly basis for years and trying to decide if you wanna remind them it’s covid or silently scream into the void again.

I’m surprised they were allowed that much site coverage with impermeable surfaces. Truly heinous!
