They removed the mirrors in the entrance hall to my building, preventing me from flipping myself off as I enter/leave. I hope this situation is soon addressed.

Yep. Both stupid menu design and stupid lighting choices are legitimate problems.
I must not make the forbidden pousse-café
This is an article about the opposite of hospitality. Anti-hospitality, I suppose. A closely-related topic that also needs to be addressed is music volume and ambient sound pressure levels.
Helpful summary, thank you!
If you liked “One Battle After Another”, you should watch “The Secret Agent”.
If you hated “One Battle After Another”, you should watch “The Secret Agent”.
I guess I now have an Easter project!
So, has anyone actually tried making one of these? It seems closely related to the elaborate Mint Julep recipe in William’s 1891 book, but expanded with a lot of champagne—probably not literally “a pint” unless the bar glass was close to the size suggested in the drawing.)
There is so much idiocy in the world, but an electric car that emits gasoline engine sounds from a loudspeaker is in a special category.
Also, Clear should not exist.
This morning at LGA Terminal C, touchless PreCheck absolutely smoked Clear. Despite comically long line stretching back to the parking garage, got through in 24 minutes.
SMASHES SHOULD BE DRANK THROUGH A STRAINER, BUT WHEN THAT IS NOT TO HAND, A MOUSTACHE CUP, AS PER CUT, WILL ANSWER THE PURPOSE.
Aquavit makes a magnificently superior Bloody Mary to vodka. Gin too.
Vodka does go well with Slavic food.
Saved for an audition. Love the idea of adding Chinese mustard.
Ah! I’m only pressing the question because my wife and I have a fatal weakness for cheesy noodles. 🤤
I will try a less oblique angle: is the history of pasta and cheese truly “epic” as stated, and is there enough research to fill a book, or is it a mere summary article all padded out with a recipe survey and loads of slick photos?
But did we really need this book?
Scan of a vintage paper table talker from Don the Beachcomber promoting the Never Say Die drink, described as “Old Jamaica and Demerara Rums blended with wild flower honey and Acapulco Limes.”
New recipe for March for Total Tiki Online and Total Tiki (app) customers! An exclusive, never-before-published 1937 recipe from Don the Beachcomber, Hollywood!
The rationale is that there are some people who are inconsiderate and bizarrely abusive. These people, alas, do exist. They are usually rich people, and we have a lot of those in NYC. The clueless/spineless response is to sacrifice your hospitality for everyone.
Two anti-hospitality trends that need a complete rethink:
- not seating incomplete parties, even with a reservation
- “time limits”
I am encountering both under circumstances that seem utterly inappropriate, thoughtless and, frankly, insulting.
That is… too blue.
Or perhaps it was you taking the photo?
So someone was taking a photo of you with the spider before informing you of said spider?
It’s an enduring tragedy more Spaniards don’t drink sherry. It’s as if few Americans drank bourbon and we just exported what we made to Japan.
We are getting a new emoji that is a depressingly good fit for our times.
Well, I guess we can finally write off NOMA and René Redzepi.
Some waiters can read a table. So many cannot.
Jeff Bridges and is wife Susan are putting the Wideluxx mechanical panoramic camera back into production. As DPReview’s Abby Ferguson puts it, the video of them unboxing and trying the first specimens is “pure joy”.

I have never subscribed to a music streaming service (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.) and probably never will. I value my favorite artists more than that. I buy records—direct when possible—which still isn’t very profitable for most musicians, but it’s something.
