One thing I always teach cyclists is if you cant see the driver look at the car wheel first, its your best indicator that the car is moving. The 1/5th of a second extra time you get looking at the wheel instead of the whole car can be critical.

I find it enlightening to go to the grocery store and see how many people are cluelessly, selfishly piloting carts though the aisles with zero spatial awareness. Folks who walk or ride bikes a lot sadly know that these people behave the exact same way as they pilot 4,000-pound motor vehicles.
