I've been rewatching old DVDs of Drop the Dead Donkey lately, the 90s sitcom set in a news room with topical jokes that were written just before recording (which happened the same week that Channel 4 aired it) and they started making Mandelson jokes about this stuff in *1998*.

"JKR has shown nothing less than disregard for the lives of trans people to the point of personally offering financial support to legislate against their very existance...but all this aggression from trans people against her is truly astonishing!"

Screencap of first reaction to Sinners, which I watched on opening day, April 18, 2025.
“Sinners. Infuckingcredible. I am speechless. Ryan Thee Coogler. Talk to him nice!!!”
🎥🎞️ one year of Sinners! One of the few nice days in a year that was…well anyway, one of the few nice days.

There's an instinct to blame the left that these agri protests are often right wing or led by people who are right wing cause "the left" didn't engage but that ignores that many of these people have their own conservative to right wing ideologies.

Two things can be true at the same time: grievances can be real and people struggling, but their protests and the allies they choose completely wrong. And the double standards the state and media applies to them also obvious. The next time there's a strike, see how far you get blocking O'Connell St

Exactly. It's not even as though we can point to state of the art health, education and public transport systems disproportionately funded by the income from agri. A country that devotes such a large proportion of its land area to an export industry to the detriment of its own needs is a plantation.

The current Strait of Hormuz situation does have the energy of a satirical British movie from the 60s where Peter Sellers's performance is praised as "brilliant, but you have to remember that cultural attitudes were a bit different back then."

1/ A leader of the #fuelprotest told me last night he doesn't believe in climate change, said the climate has always changed and it was hotter 5 million years ago than it is now. I asked how long farmers have been around. Millions of years, he said...

You can probably support the working class and demand support for people who are struggling because of capitalist inequality and also not pretend massively bigoted rhetoric and action isn't happening or being Trojan-horsed in under the guise of taking down those in power, by the way. Just a thought.

Once more, these protests have been effective because these are people who matter, not because of some strategic masterstroke.
