From Holocene stability to industrial acceleration: shifting patterns of carbon accumulation in North American boreal and temperate lakes From Holocene stability to industrial acceleration: shifting patterns of carbon accumulation in North American boreal and temperate lakes, Flamand, Aude, Talbot, Julie, Heathcote, Adam J, Aulard, Candice, Lapierre, Jean-François

I'm happy to see this new research published! In this paper led by wonderful Aude Flamand we show that anthropogenic influence has reshaped carbon storage in lakes. This is important because lakes store lot of carbon although they cover a relatively small area 🧪🏞

Epic river migrations of fish rapidly collapsing, UN report finds Vast journeys, among world’s great wonders, found to be under threat as freshwater fish populations crash by 81% “It’s very hard to imagine what’s going on beneath the water when you look at a river – but you have billions of fish making these epic migrations, some of the largest animal migrations on Earth,” said Dr Zeb Hogan, at the University of Nevada in the US. The longest migration of any freshwater fish species is the dorado catfish, which makes a migration of 7,000 miles (11,000km), from spawning in the foothills of the Andes to feeding in the Amazon estuary and back again. The silver-gold fish themselves were incredible, said Hogan: “They get to about 2 metres long.” Continue reading...

The collapse of Maya civilization: drought doesn’t explain everything Research by UdeM’s Benjamin Gwinneth calls for a reconsideration of purely climate-based explanations for why the lowland population of Central America went into major decline.

#GEOGRAPHY "The transformation or 'collapse' of Maya civilization was not a mechanical result of a uniform climate catastrophe," @gwinneth.bsky.social finds. "It was a complex phenomenon in which ... socio-political and economic factors played a decisive role." nouvelles.umontreal.ca/en/article/2...
