New Post! Batata nu bhajiya, or potato (aloo) pakora. It includes a big video about pakora where I show you how to make onion, eggplant, mixed and banana bhajiya as well, using the same batter. Enjoy!

Excited to launch a rebuild of my website, Indiaphile, this week. Note the butterfly in our social icons (and no bird, lol).

I had a lovely time talking to Kathie (Hand-Me-Down Recipes) about Barley Malpua!
New recipe just dropped!
Snake gourd shaak. Snake gourd has been used in Indian ingredients for thousands of years. This shaak (stir-fry) very likely resembles the dish that would have been eaten in ancient times and remains relevant today.
Using moong dal, @steve.thomaspatel.com and I shot a short video testing whether it makes sense to soak your dal before you cook it.
It's so pretty.

Did you know black pepper was once called "black gold?" In ancient times, Indian black pepper was so valuable that it was used as currency in trade with the Roman Empire.

My son's favorite :)
Thank you. I just added all of those movies to my watchlist. I'll show what I can to my 7-year-old as well. He's been getting an education lately!
Puja and Steve enjoy a cup of cha with some accompaniments.
This was a fun shoot! It had something to do with masala dabbas and cha.

I get so excited when the Super Bowl comes around. I love cooking for the parties! Even though I'm avoiding meat these days, I worked hard on this Guide to Chicken Wings. Perhaps you will find it useful? Ever made butter chicken wings? Or my favorite, soy-garlic?

Fennel cocktail
I've always loved this pic -- the way the fennel drink glows against the background. This is one of my favorite cocktail recipes and my go-to when I want to make a special drink for a guest.

I am relieved to hear the voice of the public still carries some weight in these times.
The U.S. Air Force will resume teaching about the nation's first Black pilots and the women pilots of World War II. This followed widespread public outcry over their earlier decision to stop teaching about the Tuskegee Airmen and the WASPs.
Here's a fun video I shot with my husband, Steve. Testing him on some Gujarati that I've been sharing with him for 20 years! He claims he knows the kitchen terms the best!

May I have the number for your doctor? I like mine, but it's always good to keep your options open :)
Is there any way to make this sound ok?

Here's my version of Yavagu, one of India's ancient recipes. I use red rice to try to capture some of that ancient tradition.

Straining the herbs and spices for ukado.
A warm, steamy cup of ukado.
Feeling a little sniffly this morning. Nothing like a spicy glass of ukado to warm the insides. Ukado, or "kadha" to many people, is an old Indian (ayurvedic) remedy my mom taught me to make.

No, no. You have to replace your furniture that has survived long enough to go out of style with something that has to be replaced every 2 years!
