RVH - A Different Way to Read a Mets Win   It finally ended! After two weeks of losses that felt heavier than the standings, the Mets beat the Twins 3–2. The losing streak stops at 12. That’s the headline. But the more interesting story is how it happened. For this game, I tracked the offense a different way — not inning by inning, but turn by turn through the lineup. Every nine plate appearances, one full cycle of the order. Not just what happened. But how the offense evolved. Mets Offense — Turns Through Lineup Time Through Lineup PA AB H 2B 3B HR R RBI BB K BA OBP SLG OPS RISP LOB 1st time thru 9 9 2 1 0 0 1 1 0 5 .222 .222 .333 .556 1-3 1 2nd time thru 9 9 3 1 0 0 1 1 0 1 .333 .333 .444 .778 0-2 1 3rd time thru 9 6 1 0 0 0 0 0 3 2 .167 .444 .167 .611 0-2 2 4th time thru 7 5 2 1 0 0 1 1 2 0 .400 .571 .600 1.171 1-1 1 TOTAL 34 29 8 3 0 0 3 3 5 8 .276 .382 .379 .761 2-8 7 Whole Game (What Happened) * 8 hits * 5 walks * .382 OBP * 2-for-8 with RISP * 7 LOB That’s not a broken offensive line. It’s a functional offense that finally converted enough. Turn-by-Turn (Why It Happened) Turn 1 — Overpowered Five strikeouts in nine plate appearances. The Mets weren’t controlling at-bats. The pitcher dictated everything. They scratched out a run, but the process was thin. Turn 2 — Adjustment Strikeouts dropped from five to one. Contact increased. The offense stabilized. This is what a capable lineup does — it learns. Turn 3 — The Game Three walks. .444 OBP. Real pressure. And: * 0 runs * 0-for-2 RISP * 2 stranded Maximum pressure. Zero conversion. If this game goes the other way, this is the inning you point to. Turn 4 — The Difference This time, they finished it. * OBP * Contact * Extra-base hit * Run scored Same ingredients as Turn 3. Different result. The Inflection Point The Mets didn’t suddenly become a great offense. They followed the same progression: * Struggle * Adjust * Create pressure The difference: They converted once after failing once That’s the entire game. Takeaways 1. The offense can adjust Turn 1 → Turn 2 proves it. 2. They can generate pressure 5 walks, multiple traffic innings. 3. Conversion remains inconsistent Turn 3 vs Turn 4 is the gap. 4. Timing > totals Same output, different timing = different outcome. Final Thought This wasn’t dominant. It wasn’t clean. But it mattered. Process finally turned into result. And sometimes, that’s how a season resets.

Thursday Trade Tracker: Miami Marlins. A Game 163 Shutout, 9 RBI against the Yankees, and the Greatest Hitting Catcher of All-Time! The history of trades between the Mets and Marlins is a fascinating study in division dynamics - a rare case where two rivals have frequently served as each other's most prolific business partners. While most teams are hesitant to hand a silver bullet to a direct competitor, the Mets and Marlins have spent decades swapping franchise icons, All-Stars, and top prospects in deals that have reshaped both organizations. From the fire sales in South Beach to the "win now" gambles in Queens, the...

Alex Rubinson - Nolan McLean has No Choice but to be Perfect It’s no secret that the New York Mets were reeling before last night's victory over the Minnesota Twins. It’s never a good thing when the opposing team openly trolls you on social media like the Twins did on Tuesday night after it handed New York its 12th consecutive loss. With Juan Soto finally back from a short IL stint, the hope is the offense can finally show a pulse.  On the pitching side of things, Carlos Mendoza’s staff has been solid. Although they might rank below average in ERA, they are in the top 10 in WHIP and have not been the reason the Mets season has started to spiral out of control. Fair or not, the hurler leading the staff is Nolan McLean. After a strong stint in the big leagues to close out the 2025 season, McLean has picked up right where he left off.  It’s pretty impressive when you take a no-hitter into the sixth inning and that ends up being your worst start of the season. No one is blaming the losing streak on McLean, and it’s even tougher when such an inexperienced pitcher is tasked with being the team’s stopper, but even after the tough loss on Tuesday, that is exactly where the Mets find themselves.  McLean has made a grand total of 13 starts in his big league career. After last season, there were major question marks surrounding New York’s rotation. It’s why David Stearns went out and acquired Freddy Peralta from the Milwaukee Brewers in the offseason.  Even with that major move, McLean is currently the team’s ace. Although it hasn’t always been the case, the expectation is to win when he takes the mound, as he’s given up three or fewer runs in every one of his five starts to begin the season and has worked into the seventh inning in each of his last three appearances. Not only is he giving the Mets length, but the quality is even better than what the raw numbers suggest.  In just his five starts, McLean already has a positive eight overall run value. That is in the 98th percentile of all MLB pitchers. A lot of that has to do with his elite fastball. When we talk about the best pitchers in the game and their fastballs, McLean is not a popular name that comes up, but the underlying stats say otherwise.  His fastball run value alone is responsible for a six-run value, good for 98th percentile. Although his secondary stuff doesn’t rank quite as high, both his offspeed and breaking pitches are a major plus, ranking in the 82nd and 75th percentiles respectively.  What is fascinating about McLean is that despite placing just outside the top five in strikeouts, he doesn’t possess elite swing and miss numbers. He has not been fooling hitters, as he is only in the 16th percentile in chase rate. Although his 58th percentile whiff percentage is good, it is not elite like his strikeout results.  Where McLean really makes his money is the quality of contact (or lack thereof) off of the bats of opposing hitters. He is in the 65th percentile in hard-hit rate, which helps his expected opponent batting average climb all the way up to the 94th percentile. As of now, opponents are expected to hit a miniscule .168 against him. Even more impressive, McLean is in the top five percent with an opponent slugging percentage of .238.  For how often he throws it, his sinker is by far his best pitch. It is interesting to note how effective his curveball has been to start the year. Hitters have mustered just one hit, a single, against the pitch and have registered 11 strikeouts. McLean has only thrown the curve 41 total times this season. It’s certainly possible that the pitch is so successful because it’s his fifth pitch, but as McLean continues to face more and more batters, it is worth exploring if that pitch can stay at its current level even if it’s thrown more frequently.  McLean doesn’t have any reason to tinker with repertoire and sequencing given how well he’s played coming out of the gates, but as hitters see him more times throughout this season (and eventually his career), McLean could consider throwing the curveball more often to keep hitters off-balance and guessing.  The biggest bright spot on the team from Queens is the 24-year-old right hander. He is one of the few people to not share blame during the Mets recent woes. If the Mets are going to be playing deep into October, which was the expectation heading into 2026, it can’t just be the Nolan McLean show.  McLean doesn’t come off as someone who will feel or bend to that pressure, but you are asking a lot from a guy who made eight starts prior to this season. He shouldn’t have to feel the weight of the sport’s largest market on his shoulders. He shouldn’t have been forced to be the team’s ace this early in his young career. Alas, that is the role he has been thrusted into. Like it or not, a third round pick out of Oklahoma from the 2023 draft is now who everyone turns to and relies on.  Things might change with Soto back in the fold, but as of now, five no-hit innings to begin his night were not good enough on Tuesday. If McLean isn’t perfect, the Mets are left searching for answers.

Paul Articulates - Random thoughts It finally happened.  The Mets were able to hold on and secure a win last night, ending a twelve game losing streak.  Frankly, we are all exhausted right now.  We used up an entire season worth of emotional energy trying to will away this bad streak.  So here are a few thoughts going through my head as I process this victory. * Another very good starting pitching job.  Clay Holmes went 7 innings, gave up only two runs, and propelled the team into the late innings with a chance.  This is what we need our starters to do.  McLean did it last night, Holmes tonight.  Great job. * Residuals from the losing streak were in full display tonight.  Really bad judgement by Mark Vientos to try to score on a play that was not close.  This is the losing mentality - trying to do more than you can to get over the top; but not understanding that the consequences were worse than the benefit of that run.  Vientos also came off the bag on the throw from short in the ninth - once again trying to gain a split second when the consequence was to lose any chance at a close call. * Bad luck stuck with this team for quite a while during the streak and it is still with them.  Losing Lindor to a calf injury is not a good thing, especially when he showed signs of coming out of his annual April funk.  His last 23 at-bats had him hitting at a .360 clip. * On second thought, if Lindor sits down for a week or two and Ronny Mauricio comes up to play short this may not be bad luck.  Mauricio is on a tear in Syracuse right now, having hit three homers in a game on Tuesday.  The Mets have a significant power void right now, and if Mauricio can add some pop to the lineup the results could be good. * Did Soto make the difference?  Well, not on the scoreboard, but he had some very good at-bats and had some hard hit balls caught that won't show up.  Maybe just his presence in the lineup let the other guys breathe instead of trying to do it all themselves.  It can't be a coincidence that Baty walked twice when he swung at just about everything in April. * Confidence builder #1: Brooks Raley came in and did his job - no lingering effects from his blown game last series.   * Confidence builder #2 - Luke Weaver closed the game out with a 4 out save and looked very confident in the ninth striking out three of four batters. * Confidence builder #3 - Carlos Mendoza left Weaver in to finish the game.  It doesn't seem like much, but just seeing Weaver run back out there in the ninth made me feel like judgement can overcome analytics every once in a while. * What is wrong with Luis Robert's arm?  He used to have a cannon, and has produced two weak, off-line throws in two games on plays that he typically makes.  Maybe he was disoriented by waking up from the nightmare that he was back playing with the White Sox in the last dozen games. Enough said.  Christian Scott on the mound tomorrow.  Let's win two!
