“what I learned was that the work was not tightly coupled with our clinical partner. If that remains the case, then however good the science is, it risks ending up only in journals rather than becoming patents, businesses, or real-world applications.” 🙄 said by every med school dean as well.

I’m also seeing the consequences of the new “no paylines” mandate and it’s not good. POs have a lot more power but they’re also being influenced by leadership mandates that deprioritize the demographics you would expect and certainly not lifting up ECRs.
Neuroscientists across the United States shared with @thetransmitter.bsky.social what they hope the new director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke prioritizes during their tenure. #neuroskyence

Thanks Oz 🙏🏼 looking forward to finally getting it out! Now the NIH just needs to give me $$ to continue the project 😅
That’s the one. Actually the smoothest and clearest peer review I’ve had! No surprises at least.
This is our Arc-tau EV story…at Cell ☺️. Maybe the Alzheimer’s field will start taking us seriously now 🙃
Thank you!
My fav words “accepted in principle"! Thanks reviewer 4 for being so positive!
"The new experiments are not only responsive to my critique, but to the points made by the other 3 reviewers. The paper will be of interest to a broad readership, from cell biologists to Alzheimer's researchers."
I’m OK but some faculty are facing a cliff. I’m seeing ESI’s not get funded with a < 10% score. It’s dire for some.
Does there need to be a specific context to be a touch kind and empathetic? Even when giving bad news or criticism..some thought still goes a long way.
Indeed
Absolutely. I fear that many are just so desensitized.
It’s brutal in academia right now. A lot is out of our control, but it doesn’t cost anything to remember that there are humans behind papers and grants…reviewers, program officials and funders can be more empathetic in the face of unprecedented chaos in the US scientific enterprise.
NIH Notice of Awards are like stumbling on to a pot of gold under the rainbow...so stoked for @alicia-walker.bsky.social finally getting her F31 NoA!! Only a year after she submitted it....
😭
Literally 😩
Came back to the US, to find out there was a measles exposure in my lab’s building. In this day and age 😑
😢 this is what “they” want though. And by they, I mean the leadership hell bent on destroying the NIH. SROs were apparently blindsided by this notice too.
😮💨
Yeah. And there’s absolutely no advantage for being a standing member who has to do 3 cycles in a year.
Yup
Very true! Their accommodation is giving you 2 extra weeks to turn it in late.
Yikes!
It’s certainly counter productive IMO and pretty much the only tangible benefit other than service to our peers. They had started gutting this years ago but now completely pulled the plug.
Whelp. NIH just got rid of continuous submission completely. Because it’s “too much work” for them 😩. This is baffling. It doesn’t take months to assign a grant to a study section.
Last night in Korea! Head to the famous Myeongdong Night Market..
Wife opts for a Korean facial. I opt for chicken and beer FTW!
Some Sites and Eats of Hokkaido, Japan 😍
Need to get an ice cream still!
Hello Hokkaido!
