What Is a Shark? A New Genetic Analysis Throws an ‘Unexpected Wrench’ Into Our Understanding
Some shark species might belong to their own distinct lineage, which is separate from all other sharks, rays and skates, according to a new study www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/w...

A graphic showing overshoot days for different countries
With less than a third into the year, it was overshoot day for Aotearoa yesterday - the day when Earth's resources and services would have been used up if the whole world consumed as much
Jono Ridler recently made it to Wellington...by SWIMMING there from NORTH CAPE, a 1400km journey. I loved getting to chat to him for this piece for @patagonia.com. Please sign his petition against bottom trawling! 🏊🐟 www.patagonia.co.nz/blogs/storie...
The ocean has reached a 10% protection milestone, but hitting the global 30% target by 2030 requires protecting an area the size of the Indian Ocean in just four years.
Experts warn that progress must accelerate to secure our marine future.
@elizabethalberts.bsky.social reports for #Mongabay.
How do we know the extend of biological invasions?
Is it a large invasions? A small one?
How do we compare invasions of tiny organisms (e.g., ants) and of larger ones (e.g., rabbits)?
How do we quantify objectives, or efficiency of management?

"New research by University of Auckland PhD candidate Diana Borse found that more gardens translated into more weeds." Excited to see Diana's research in the media. She submitted her thesis 2 weeks ago! More to come on this! @dianaborse.bsky.social 🧪🌏🌐
Found this to be informative video, that puts things into perspective. Via Max Fisher on Instagram www.instagram.com/reel/DWrsUcU...
Congrats! I think the next step for using this metric to understand the impacts of #bioinvasions would be to develop 'dose-response' curves that relate invader biomass to changes in (e.g.) native populations, species richness, & ecosystem function.
🩵🏊 Jono Ridler just completed the longest staged ocean swim - 1367 km over 90 days down the east coast Aotearoa New Zealand. We must find better was to fish than bottom trawling. Support here #swim4theocean

Articles on HPAI are always welcome but unfortunately the headline question isn't quite answered.
The answer is: not very prepared.
We are doing what we can at a local level but MPI seems completely under-resourced, largely leaving us as non-biosecurity experts to figure it out for ourselves.
Struggling to reconcile this ‘vision’ with the PMs choice for the new Minister of Research, Science & Technology. Does he hate research that much??? 😞 www.beehive.govt.nz/release/scie...

With no records since 2017, sawfish are now feared "functionally extinct" in Sri Lankan waters. Overfishing and habitat loss have pushed this critically endangered species to the brink. Researchers are calling for urgent surveys to find and protect any surviving populations.

The ocean absorbs our heat.
It also carries our waste.
Nearly all of this starts on land and ends up here.
There are limits to what it can take.

None of this is helped by particularly problematic politics & game playing. The ocean & all that lives in it deserves better. 😞
In light of yesterday's u-turn by the Government on the 2026 Fisheries Amendment Bill regarding the removal of minimum legal sizes for commercial fishers, I thought I would take a look at what was actually proposed, & what it would have meant in practice.
I haven't seen any decent analysis of this.
As usual Andy brings an educated and sensible opinion on fisheries issues. I admire not only his knowledge on the details but also his sharing of references. This is the most educated discussion I’ve read so far on the minimum size issue.

Do you have shifting baseline syndrome?
Yesterday's global sea-surface temperature was 5.17 standard deviations above the 1982-2011 average (first 30 years of data).
The odds of this happening by chance are about 8,500,000-to-1 against (without climate change).
Seriously what is going on with octopuses
