Nobody is better at restoring the public's trust in universities than a NY Times columnist lecturing students on "how to fall in love with someone" ...

... or "how to divorce your wife of 27 years for your much younger research assistant"?

We are not serious institutions.

The BASED Actโ€™s big question mark

โ€œWeโ€™ve established that this self-preferencing is real and it gives an advantage to the platforms themselves. Whether thatโ€™s good or bad for consumers is much less well-established.โ€

I like conferences in general, but I can't remember one that I enjoyed and where I learned as much as the Arnold Ventures BRIDGE event on online harassment and stalking.

So inspiring to meet researchers and practitioners in this field!

DiCello Levitt, Co-Counsel File First Antitrust Class Action Against Vail Resorts and Alterra Over Epic and Ikon Ski Pass Pricing DiCello Levitt, coโ€‘counsel file first antitrust class action against Vail Resorts and Alterra, alleging inflated prices.

A new antitrust case against Vail and Alterra takes aim at Epic and Ikon pass pricing.

Core issue: bundling + ecosystem power

Cheap season passes, but very high day tickets โ†’ steering demand, locking in consumers, and squeezing independents

Following the AEA decision I heard that several NBER members emailed the NBER leadership to make a similar decision.

Research on ESG is really the perfect storm: mostly bullshit, yet highly cited and very lucrative.

George Serafeim didn't disclose that he was collaborating with green investors while publishing (now discredited) research on the returns to such investments. HBS did nothing and even promoted his research.

At the same time Ben Edelman disclosed his COIs and HBS still fired him.

True, but I was 99% sure that this leave would eventually turn into an expulsion especially given the expulsion decision of the AEA.

The WSJ finally officially reports what we've known since early December.

NBER cuts ties with Larry Summers.

To give you a sense of how big a deal this is: Summersโ€™ PhD advisor made NBER what it is today

A Boston bartending king. A young woman from Maine. A tragedy that changed everything. - The Boston Globe After Julia Phan was found dead in Ran Duanโ€™s house on New Yearโ€™s Day, the online culture that fueled his rise turned against him.

Oh, and online reviews mention overcharging at one of his restaurants to this day.

Remember Ran Duan, the restaurant owner overcharging customers?

Turns out he's a media-savvy celebrity with luxury watches, a jet-set insta, diamond-draped models, shady business practices, drugs, a young woman's fatal overdose in his home, and a stunning failure to act.

Large-scale online deanonymization with LLMs shows how easily pseudonymous users can now be re-identified from unstructured text alone.

When discussing our EJMR paper at NBER SI 2023 Catherine Tucker argued that rising compute would soon erode online anonymity. The future may already be here.

One of my favorite things in the Olympics is looking at the slowest racers in the alpine technical events (Giant Slalom & Slalom) and then wondering whether I could beat them.

I am very confident I could beat the Indian guy in the slalom. Not 100% sure about the Eritrean in the Giant Slalom.

Filipe is definitely signed up for the Brazilian Championships (Giant Slalom) this weekend.

As cities became more economically important, medieval rulers shifted administrative control from landed to urban elites, but then created central assemblies or parliaments to ensure coordination and information flows.
