I'm supposed to be part of this IDEAS taping in Charlottetown on March 26 as part of their series looking at Canadian democracy.
The goal is to talk about electoral reform in a province which has considered this multiple times. Looking forward to it. You can book your tickets now.

A meteorologist who made a life-saving call to a Newfoundland mayor urging him to evacuate residents from the path of post-tropical storm Fiona in 2022 says cuts to weather services in the United States could have impacts in hurricane-prone Atlantic Canada.

I'm not just a journalist. I was also a customer.
This is the first time I've received a statement confirming I will be getting no statement.
Yesterday I emailed Toys R Us for confirmation their store in Charlottetown is closing (one of 8 stories I chased from our radio news desk).
Today I got this: "Hi Kerry,
Thank you for reaching out. I have confirmed that Toys“R”Us will not be sharing a statement for the story."
This topic is also the subject of our This is #PEI podcast this week, if you've got 23:09 to burn...

Last year, Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) — the former GOP chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee — told a reporter that because of right-wing media, Russian propaganda had “infected a good chunk of my party’s base.”
Here's how that happened: www.mediamatters.org/trumprussia/...
An investigation of land holdings of two Buddhist groups will provide the first true test of measures in #PEI's Lands Protection Act meant to prevent large corporations with deep pockets from getting around the law's intent -- to limit any one entity's control over land.

“Why don’t you say thank you. I’ve never heard a thank you. So disrespectful.”
The PCs haven't announced a date for their convention.
#PEI is in the odd situation of having interim leaders in place for all three parties in the house.
At this point the Greens will be first to choose a permanent leader. Their convention is June 7, bumped ahead from an initial date of May 2026.
This didn't take long.
Newly-minted premier Rob Lantz already needs a new education minister (he said he was planning to appoint someone to replace himself). Now, amid tariff threats, his cabinet needs a new minister of economic development, innovation & trade. #peipoli

Hermiz said the woman told patrons "she hates what the United States is doing to us and she doesn't support it. And she's so happy we won the hockey game and it's a little token of appreciation for Canadians and how much she loves us."

There are PEI versions of this making the rounds. Someone just called me asking if I interviewed Premier Lantz (yes) & if the topic was investment opportunities / crypto (definitely not).
People have lost 10s of 1000s. Make sure your loved ones know.

Halfway through his second mandate, with a big majority and his party well ahead in the polls, Dennis King made a surprise announcement today he is stepping down as #PEI premier, effective 1 pm tomorrow. #peipoli #cdnpoli

This is what most of the US population who are eagerly voting for Trump see.
They don’t see that Canada and Mexico were already doing this. They don’t see Fentanyl is a non-issue at the Can/US border.
They see Trump Wins.
CBC spoke to some #PEI shoppers today about the trade war and the impact tariffs could have on the local economy and on them.
If there's one theme that sticks out: it's going to be hard to sell US products to a segment of the Canadian market, tariffs or no tariffs.

I keep thinking back to the very first thought that popped in my ahead after the US election in November -- 'I should have planted a vegetable garden.'
I think I can let the experts handle potatoes but I'll plant other veg & more herbs this year.
Our morning crew put together a special edition of our #ThisIsPEI podcast today, focusing on the #PEI reaction to pending US tariffs.
Includes an interview with our premier & representatives of our 2 biggest export industries, farming & fishing:

Kays has been selling 5 lbs bags of potatoes for under $2/bag. They're seconds so not the best for baking but great for soup.
#PEI potato soup for lunch.
I can do this all day.
A week. A month. A year. Whatever.

It was the PCs who proposed prior to the 2019 election that committee membership be changed to take the majority away from government. That was based on frustration from years in Opposition, trying to get, for example, a copy of the Liberal government's contract with Bell: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
It's made for some fascinating debates, and at times quite fractious debates, for those of us who are avid #PEIpoli watchers.
I'm lining up a guest to talk about this tonight on Compass. I spoke to Mitch on Island Morning about this yesterday: www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...
Another c'tee wants more NHL records. Last week the chair of that c'tee was called out for trying to redirect documents from the c'tee to himself, saying it was his right as chair to decide if they became public. The clerk of the legislature told him that's not within his limited scope of power.
The health committee is demanding contracts the province has with private long-term care operators, saying Islanders deserve to be able to see those. PCs argue that's equivalent to forcing private businesses to open their books. (Government has released other contracts before.)
The PCs have been trying to find ways to delay or stop this, in some cases citing the province's freedom of information law. But FOIPP does not apply in this case -- both the clerk of the legislature and the privacy commissioner made that clear last week. #peipoli
A #PEI legislature rule change in 2019 gave the 2 opposition parties a majority of votes on each standing committee.
The Liberals & Greens are starting to flex that power to compel documents -- it started with an unredacted copy of the province's NHL sponsorship contract.

"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy."
Somebody said that once, reportedly.
