Why do politicians spend so much time signaling what they *intend* to do? In new work hot off the presses we show that while voters care about the outcomes they experience, in an environment where politicians don't have perfect control over outcomes, voters also reward good intentions.

It isn't viewed as negative or positive (from a broad social desirability perspective), so not necessarily more negative - but I don't test for that specifically and it's something to think about. But, people do get that if they express less cynicism, they'll end up looking politically uninformed.
Have you missed us terribly? Let's fix that with an MPSA HAPPY HOUR!
Date: Saturday, April 6
Time: 8:00PM-🤷
Location: The Game Room (inside the Chicago Athletic Association), 12 S Michigan Ave
All polisci invited--even if you're not Jr or Americanist... So bring your pals!
If this sounds cool to you, I’ll be presenting my next project on political cynicism and our perceptions of others on the “Innovations in Political Communication Research” on Friday at 1:15 #MPSA2024
I find that, while people don’t view political cynicism as “good” socially, they understand it can be used to look knowledgeable about politics. Specifically, they understand that they can use political cynicism to avoid looking like they DON’T know about politics.
🚨 My piece on impression management and political cynicism is out now in POQ!
In this paper I look into the relationship between social desirability, the impression of looking knowledgeable about politics and the expression of political cynicism.
