The Billboard Artist of the Year stats are interesting for questions like “how big was Madonna at the time.” She was the #1 artist of the 80s, beating Michael Jackson for placements.

it's important for me to ruin this for people, like how I tell everyone that the countdown timers on reality shows are all fake

Have confirmed that I can play this 👍 (can even do a decent solo because it's in D minor/Dorian, thanks Koji Kondo)

I just mean the guy in the video provides some music criticism I like, b/w a hyperbolic adjective. I think the same thing of the gorilla that plays phil collins drums

Technologies often take longer to reach full adoption than the discourse around them makes it seem, even in wealthier countries with more technology infrastructure. E.g., cable television finally got to 80% of US households only in 2000, with its peak at 90% in 2010. Global internet connectivity (hugely boosted through smartphone adoption) finally passed 50% in 2018, still very unevenly distributed between urban and rural areas, and smartphones have also been one of the most rapidly adopted technologies ever. But widespread global connectivity is a pretty recent phenomenon, its impacts are less than 20 years old, and it will still take a long time to reach true universal internet adoption.

I think it's more descriptive than people framed it as at the time, I do think he's pretty easy to spot

I'm no hater of the sequencer, just don't like the formula that emerge around in the early '10s for it (and yes, listening again, CHVRCHES sounds more like patient zero and like Antonoff is figuring out how to do his version of it)

CHVRCHES one to look at again. I always absolutely hated the sequencer turn in pretty much all guises so am not really well versed in it!

The metastasizing of it might be from several places all coming out of that moment. You can sort of hear the sequencer emerge as push push push on stuff like “Ribs,” would need to listen to a few other things

I think Swift probably got it from Lorde/Antonoff

curious about the live performance element for all three of these, who sound much closer to a TikTok-aided demo to superstar slip n slide than slicker industry types, not that I actually know, just sort of what it sounds like

also a monkey's paw for mid-aughts teenpop fans (I think the two things are connected. she and goose guy are perfect for each other)

I guess I sort of "saw it" in its impact? Was amazed at how influential the style seemed, no idea if it was 1:1
