I’m glad to see that Colorado Humanities is going to keep the no AI rule for the book awards. We have too many amazing actual human writers to allow slop into the awards.

Working on securing something a bit more permanent. Also trying to tie up loose ends from my last position. It’s been a challenging transition, but still the right choice. Going to keep working with books however I can.

Composite of two images. On left, a letter from Frederic G. Melcher, and on the right a photo of Melcher holding a book.

Text below reads: "The Caldecott Medal: ‘A Hasty Idea Thrown Out.’ In a letter less than ten sentences long, Frederic G. Melcher, who established the Newbery Medal in 1921, created a preliminary sketch for what would become the Randolph Caldecott Medal. His “hasty idea” became one of ALA’s most enduring and prestigious book awards.

The Caldecott Medal, established in 1937, is of one of the most prestigious children’s book awards in the world. But the idea was first presented as a hasty idea in a letter. Read more about its origins: https://bit.ly/4bh6mX4

Being an SLS for Arapahoe Libraries has given me so many opportunities to figure out what I love most about the library world. Getting to fill in on the bookmobile was an extra special treat.

I was recently on a Sunday shift at the library & it was cold, rainy, & very slow. We can read on desk so I finished “The Hollow Places” by @tkingfisher.com Fabulous, horribly unsettling. I now deeply distrust willows & my co-librarians were enjoying my concerned expressions. 😂

Text graphic of a quote from ALA President Sam Helmick: "One in five households in our country still do not have access to reliable home broadband. Hotspots are not a permanent fix, but they'll make sure students, jobseekers, veterans and seniors don't get left behind. The need is urgent, especially in rural areas. The funding is there, through the federal E-Rate program. The experienced delivery mechanism is there, through the 1,762 public libraries approved by the FCC to loan hotspots to their communities. Chairman Carr's move to repeal the program next week looks like one more tactic of this administration to limit Americans’ access to information."

ALA and partners have submitted a joint letter urging the FCC to reconsider overturning the E-Rate rule and to protect these vital programs that expand internet access for students and library patrons across America.

Having to make some complicated decisions about my future. I’m equal parts excited and also incredibly sad. I am hopeful that things will work out for the best eventually and I will look back on this as the start of something amazing.
