he is very good at this job. there are others who have the juice, too, and they're all under 40 years old. i hope they can break the gerontocracy that has neutered their party.

best sports podcast out there right now is lovable reunion. a lot of really good stuff in this one -- especially about how to coach kids up with love, not yelling.
...my views about success, COL, and sundry features associated with the opportunities to live "the good life" have pretty radically shifted over the last five or six years.
yeah i tend to think of this in terms of thresholds and contexts. like theres {some set} of places where a degree will unlock a moderately high pr{some acceptable set of living conditions}
and then its possible to work backwards from that
but as someone living in bum-f deep south...
sure, and im not saying that prestige doesn't matter. it does, especially by leveling the choice set for where its possible to live (given degree choices) and the market sector you're in. but i do think that this operates in ways that end up being a bit of a caricature, especially in non-big-metro.
free country, personal choices are good, everyone’s circumstances are contextual, send your kids wherever, but there’s something about the choice set and perceived incentives that feels super off to me
The thing that clocks as…interesting…to me is that the obsession w prestige is usually grounded in concern about obtaining future job opportunities (decades down road) made by people who often never held a job outside of an extremely bizarre labor market.
Academia Is a highly path dependent yet unusual labor market and it fascinates me to observe how folks justify where to send their children for primary education bc the explanation is often about needing to obtain prestige opportunities for some future fancy college admission
what a time to be alive
pardons are for crooks
i know this is old. but it popped onto my timeline and it made me mad all over again.
a huge chunk of my professional work has benefitted from both competitive funding and the social goods produced by the NSF and the way in which republicans have tormented this institution is infuriating.

The nice thing about modern baseball is that printing volume is high and availability is pretty good. Certainly better than Pokemon in my experience.

parabolic growth in both the sealed and graded card space fueled by crypto and traditional investment portfolios realizing that there is shit tons of money to be made, washed, and dumped.
